Music Recording Equipment

I am an amateur musician who studies music and plays mostly in my living room.  My teacher does not use recording equipment in her work.  Can anyone recommend some good music recording equipment?

Re: Music Recording Equipment

It depends on what you want to accomplish and your budget. I doubt you'll ever hear anyone knock ProTools, but then again it's far from free also.

I play in a regionally successful band. We just recently started tracking our practices (we're writing new material and it helps a lot to hear it played back) with Cubase. Cubase came free with the adapter we got that converts your mixing bored inputs into a stream that is passed to the PC via USB.

I used Cakewalk Home Studio on the computer. Hooked up my keyboard & mixer to the computer. I haven't used it lately since my computer when on the fritz but it works pretty well.
