Both were unsolicited (and unwanted) but one of them later turned out to be a legit new member who'd actually read and replied to one of my comments. Had I connected the two (some slight interest in my comment, and then someone being overly interested in me listening to their friend regarding something I didn't want) I probably would not have reported that one. I'd just have messaged him/her back saying, "Hey. This isn't appropriate. I'm not a friend, and I don't want to hear from some rando about my finances." Instead, I assumed scammer and reported.
Because legit help is expected to be offered in the threads, not taken private. Especially help we aren't actually asking for.
If you are a new person, and not a scammer, think about the optics, OK? We have no obligation to give you the benefit of any doubt. Send us a sketchy message under the impression we know you from something, and you'll end up reported.
Reporting is still acceptable. It just notifies the mods to investigate. I suspect that they do due diligence and investigate to see if they are legit. "See something, say something", am I right!
