Scammers using Craigslist - Beware!

This is nothing new, but it's worth mentioning again, as a young friend of mine almost got taken yesterday.

He's been looking on Craigslist for a motorcycle to buy, and he found one that was just too good to be true for the price asked.  He got all excited, wanted to see the bike and buy it on the spot, but gave me a call first, just to see what I thought about it.

I looked at the ad and it didn't smell right.  There was no masked email addy at the top of the ad below the title, and no phone number to call.  The only contact info was a .jpeg of an email addy.  The motorcycle was one I'm very familiar with, and the used value is about $12,000-$13,000.  Asking price on this one was $4600.

The bike was supposed to be in the next town over, and my young friend had already emailed for a chance to see it right away.  Fortunately, he did not put his name, address or phone number in his email.

I did a little searching, and came up with this site.  Sure enough, the "seller's" email addy was listed as one of the regular scammers using Craigslist  to cheat people out of their hard earned money.

When the "seller" responded to my friend this morning, it was just like in the script.  The bike was cheap because this "lady" got it in a divorce.  She doesn't have a license to drive.  It was also halfway across the country because she was starting over in a new town.  She'd pay for shipping, and my friend could pay an invoice sent by a non-existent Ebay service when he approved of the bike and wanted to buy it.  There'd be no risk, she said, and no obligation.  Just send personal info to get the transaction rolling.

My friend was very disappointed, of course, but happy he'd didn't lose his cash.

I'm not sure where this was eventually going to go, but this scam allegedly originates in Nigeria.

BTW, the ad for the bike was gone from Craigslist shortly after I looked at it, and probably within minutes of them receiving my friend's email.

Just wanted everybody to be careful when buying things from unknown folks at far less than value.

Scammers  tricked a lot of young Spring Breakers recently into sending money for rooms on South Beach that didn't exist.

Re: Scammers using Craigslist - Beware!

WOW  - what a coincidence !!!!!!!!!!!!

Why, just this morning while checking my hotmail, I was offered $25 million if I would help some unfortunate woman from Nigeria who's husbnad was killed by soldiers in,  or something. She needs to transfer some of her $50 mill., and she offered to give me half. I'm figuring that with that 25 mill., I might be able to pay my 2012 real estate taxes. And if there's anything left over, I figure I can buy a small stake in the NY Yankees. It's all good, dude.

Then, I checked my yahoo account and, wudduya  think I saw? Another poor, unfortunate woman whose husband, who, by the way is a very prominent physician in Nigeria, is looking to transfer a considerable amount of US dollars - she mentioned $10 million - .and she is looking for a "honest and considerate friend"  - which is obviously why she chose me to help in this, her time of duress who has a US bank account. Because she, you know, needs someplace to transfer that 10 mill. to.

Small world, eh?

Re: Scammers using Craigslist - Beware!

After hearing about folks being robbed when they get together to pick up a craigslist item I decided to just never even bother with the site.

I mean, I do have a concealed carry license and carry a Ruger 357mag but frankly the point is to NOT get myself into a bad situation where I may have to defend myself.

No craigslist for me....no thanks.

Re: Scammers using Craigslist - Beware!

I was on CL looking at a car once and you can tell the fakes becasue as OP said, their whole ad is a big jpeg with hyperlink.

A 2008 escalade for $5600?? This suv would cost about $35000 with all the upgrades it has on it. The car was supposedly in Connecticut which is close enough for me to drive there. I asked him for the VIN so I could have it checked by the state police; you never know if it was stolen or anyting. The 'owner' didnt want to give me the vin. Needless to say that was the last i heard from him. The ad was taken down about 15 minutes after i received his email.

Some lady's minature horse got stolen here in Miami.   She looked on craiglist to see if anyone was trying to sell a minature horse.   Sure enough, someone was trying to sell it.  The police pretended they were a buyer and caught the guy.
