Virus Issues

Stay away.....I'm infected.

But before you go, I have a virus on my laptop called Vundo or Vundo Trojan. This booger opens new web pages by mimicing other websites that I recently visited. So, I'm always getting credit sites offering free reports, scores, etc. Freecreditreport.com was a recent example. Yesterday I paid my car note directly through the lender and before I could get to their website, I had to go through a half dozen windows first. Also, if I do a google search, other search windows will open up. This virus also will reset my cursor position every several seconds when I type a new post or reply to another via this site. Takes forever to type.

The name of this virus was picked up by Norton 360 which is running. But won't delete after Norton has me reboot 2-3 times. I just downloaded the free version of AVG Anti-Virus and that also picked it up. Also have spybot, ad-aware, and hijack this with no luck.

Can anyone recommend a good anti-virus program?

Re: Virus Issues

When you ran hijack this, if it picked it up, be sure and post the results, I have not found a problem yet that hijack this could not fix. Last summer it took 3 weeks of daily checking and posting, but hijack this finally removed problem.

Good luck!

Re: Virus Issues

Do you mean V_U_ndo (with a "U"?)? I ask only 'cause I have a hard time keeping up with all of'em.

If that's what you mean, before you ran the removal tool, did you disable System Restore (assuming you're on XP and not Vista)? If not, you MUST disable it. Otherwise, as soon as you reboot, your compie goes right back to the previous restore point (which is where you have your lovely trojan napping).

Holler back. Tojans and viruses, I know. That's why I do most of my surfing on my Mac. Burned w-a-a-a-a-a-y too many times, you know?

Not for long, though. The new Intel Macs are more open to naughty visitors. Apple really blew it when they drifted from the Unix-based architecture. Smiley Sad

Apple's already recommending that users of the Intels invest in a good anti-virus app. Smiley Sad

Re: Virus Issues

I misspelled it. It is actually listed as "Trojan Horse Vundo.BP" by AVG. It embedds itself into several dll files and in some executable files including explorer.exe and winlogon.exe. I did run Hijack This and couldn't find anything wrong, but I do have an old version running and I didn't know what to look for until this evening.

I do have XP. I'll try to reboot differently. And will post the HJT log if unusual. I don't know if it would ever fit in one post, though.

Good catch, Wonderin!

Yeah, I'm a Mac Geek from w-a-a-a-a-a-y back and I've already had my share of "WTH???" phone calls from my "Mac-newbie" friends.

I almost feel like they're blaming ME. 'Specially since I've always been so pro-Mac! o_O

Re: Virus Issues

*snort*
Do I REALLY have to say it? Been there, done that. Smiley Sad

I once spent 36 HOURS STRAIGHT removing 3 nasty trojans and a virus at ONE time. Was my main work machine (at the time, my Mac was mainly for fun) and I had a deadline looming. All because Norton decided to take a nap on me (due to THEIR glitch, they didn't recognize my subscription). Opened the door and let'em all in for a virtual kegger.

Like I said, I know most viruses and Trojans. Intimately. Smiley Mad

Holler back with the logs. Though I think, really, if you disable the SR, it should work since it'll get rid of all the hidey spots the nasty little boogers like to hide in.
