Oh yeah, I forgot about the shuttle launch. I remember that too. I was about 10 at the time.

The oldest major news event I remember is the Cuban missile crisis and the subsequent blockade of Cuba by the Kennedy administration ...
Ronald Reagan getting shot.......over and over and over again. They played the shooting probably a thousand times on tv.

After reading this post it has finally hit home that I am old.
Sorry to do this to you, guiness...
For me, I can remember the '84 Olympics (I was 6). I remember Mary Lou Retton being the biggest thing in the world at that time.
Later on, I remember watching Oliver North in the Iran-Contra hearings.
Other than Olympics, everything I remember as a child was tragic or scandalous.
I do remember John Lennons assassination & President Reagan being shot. The big Rolling Stones concert tour, in '74 or '75
Brain still churning here.....

Geez, I am old - I clearly remember the Sputnik launch. That was in 1957.
Hi JimB,
Wow... that had to be very memorable. Did you see it on TV at the time or just read or hear about it?
You have thus far the oldest memory but you are not really old just aged well.
