Oh yeah, I forgot about the shuttle launch.  I remember that too.  I was about 10 at the time.

The oldest major news event I remember is the Cuban missile crisis and the subsequent blockade of Cuba by the Kennedy administration ...

+1

I was in elementary school in Houston TX, coming up on my 8th birthday. We were considered high risk for attack because of NASA. We had already been practicing the duck-and-cover under our school desks that would keep us safe from nuclear fallout, but this was bigger. My main memory is that of our entire elementary school being evacuated to the presumed safety of a nearby Piggly-Wiggly, the entire student body being transported by moms in station wagons who had obediently lined up in the school parking lot. This was the plan for what would be done if missiles were sighted on radar, heading for Houston. I suppose the school secretary would have started dialing all the moms when the news hit.

You gotta wonder if the civil defense planners were on LSD or what.

After reading this post it has finally hit home that I am old.

Sorry to do this to you, guiness...

For me, I can remember the '84 Olympics (I was 6). I remember Mary Lou Retton being the biggest thing in the world at that time.

Later on, I remember watching Oliver North in the Iran-Contra hearings.

Other than Olympics, everything I remember as a child was tragic or scandalous. Smiley Sad

Hi JimB,

Wow... that had to be very memorable. Did you see it on TV at the time or just read or hear about it?

You have thus far the oldest memory but you are not really old just aged well.Smiley Wink
