@demi wrote:The recent thread on where were you 30 years ago got me thinking...what major news event is your oldest memory ? I can remember family things before this, but my earliest major news item that I can remember that had an impact on me is the Alaska earthquake.
The assasination of the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr., the riots that followed, and the Apollo moon missions are my earliest memories of news events. All of course narrated by the voice of Walter Cronkite.
I remember the moon landing in 1969 - I was four. I sat in front of our black and white TV with my parents and my brother and sister. My parents were excited about it. I just remember watching and wondering how cool it would be to travel to the moon.
Have to add this: My dad (born in 1935) can remember the invasion of Pearl Harbor. He and my grandfather were listening to the news on the radio...
OMG..........I remember all of these.
Remember........The Kennedy election.......1st Catholic president...........1st atomic bomb............end of ration coupons on gas, sugar, butter.......1st tv...........vj day................d=day..............elvis............assasinations....all but Lincoln. ............sputnik and all others.........just for starters.......................

After reading this post it has finally hit home that I am old.Guiness, you are young at heart! How many "old" people have a "Happy Feet" avatar. Well, come thing of it, how many "old" people even have "a" avatar.
Yep, my heart is young. Now, if my body could just follow suit!.
I clearly remember everything that has been mentioned with the exception of the Sputnik launch. I turned one in 1957. But I do remember it being taught in school.

This was a rare sentiment during and after the Vietnam war. I for one am so pleased it is once again the prevailing sentiment.

Being in the military, I find it hard to fathom non-support for anything we are tasked to do. I am always reminding others that I do what I am told to do, just like any job.
