Who actually signs their credit cards?

After getting my Zync yesterday I wondered who else does what I do...

I do not sign my cards, on the back where the signature goes I put, "SEE ID"

It is a pathetic effort, in my 3 years of doing this I think it has been noticed and I have been asked to see my ID less than a dozen times.

Re: Who actually signs their credit cards?

Most CC say right on them that they are:

"NOT VALID WITHOUT AUTHORIZED SIGNATURE"

or

"AUTHORIZED SIGNATURE-NOT VALID UNLESS SIGNED"

Technically, they can refuse to accept your card until you sign it.

Re: Who actually signs their credit cards?

I just sign them now.. Back in the day I used to write "see ID" but when my purse was stolen no one had a problem letting the guy who stole it use my cards even though the name on the card was Jennifer and the card he used the most was a custom pink card with "see id" on the signature line.

The only person who has ever had a problem using the card with that written on the back was me or my husband. One time a store refused to accept my card because it was unsigned and then I signed it there at the register but they wouldn't accept it because I'd signed it at the register.

I just sign them when they come in now, carry only a couple and hide the rest in an inconspicous location.

That's a bad idea. The purpose of the signature is for the teller to compare that to the one on the receipt. If you don't sign the card and the crook signs your name to the card and it now matches the receipt.

That is if the teller is actually checking.

Re: Who actually signs their credit cards?

There have been discussions and debates about this ad nauseum. If you search the board, you'll probably find the threads.

In a nutshell, legally speaking, the merchants cannot ask to see your I.D. as it violates their agreement with the CCCs.That's likely why most merchants don't ask, even if it's noted on the back.

I used to write "see id" on my cards, but now I sign them. It's better not to leave them blank because if the card is lost or stolen, the other person can sign your name and easily use your card since the sig on the receipt will match the sig on your card.

Edits, funky spacing and spelling due to my iPad not getting along with the forum editor!

If I was a thief, I would think- OH yes, unsigned card = paydirt. Then sign the unsigned card with a marker. Use it like crazy because the signature would match.

Re: Who actually signs their credit cards?

I was once asked to sign a card before they accepted it. But now I make sure all are signed.

Technically according to Visa/MasterCard agreements a merchant cannot require you to show an ID as part of the purchase transaction.
