question about accepted forms of payment on ebay

While browsing some ebay auctions just now, I'm confused about whether or not paying by credit card is allowed.

Does this image mean that the ebay seller accepts Mastercard, Visa, Amex, and Discover instead of paypal ? I would prefer to never ever sign up with paypal; I trust them as much as I trust a rattlesnake.

Also, I'd read that it's okay to send a message to an ebay seller and ask if that ebay seller would be willing to accept some alternate form of payment other than paypal. Is that true ?

Re: question about accepted forms of payment on ebay

Okay.

You are still using Paypal to pay the seller. What that picture means is that you can use credit card or deposit account through Paypal. Seller does NOT get your credit card/deposit account information from you, Paypal does. Paypal will use that information to withdrawal money and deposit it into seller's Paypal account.

In another word, Paypal is the one who debt your credit card/deposit account, not sellers. Paypal simply hand over the money to sellers minus fee sellers agreed to pay.

You do NOT need to sign up for a Paypal account. You can pay using Paypal without ever need to sign up a Paypal account.

ebay's policy prohibits alternative payment unless,

* All payment methods specified does NOT work.

* You select shipping as local pickup.

Otherwise sellers are prohibited from accepting money orders and personal checks.

Re: question about accepted forms of payment on ebay

Thank you ! That helped me a lot.

I want to buy a new cell phone on ebay to replace a cell phone that is malfunctioning. Based on what you explained, I'll proceed with making a purchase.

If there is a problem with the cell phone (for example, the cell phone is used even though it was advertised as new or the cell phone does not work even though it was advertised as working), am I allowed to file a dispute with my credit card company if I paid with a credit card through paypal ?

Re: question about accepted forms of payment on ebay

You can file a dispute directly with credit card company, although it'll be more effective filing directly at ebay.

Since Paypal is used during the transaction, you are entitled for buyer protection from ebay. That is ebay will refund the entire fund should things cannot be ressolved between you and the seller.

Re: question about accepted forms of payment on ebay

Thank you, trumpet205

Because you took the time to help me, I was able to successfully buy exactly the right cellphone [brand new] to replace a family member's cell phone whose inner display screen stopped working. It was your help that made this possible.

I tried to find how many more times that I can pay on ebay with a credit card without signing up for paypal. I read that a person can do this only 15 times Smiley Sad

I belong to a forum where people mainly use paypal to pay each other when they buy used equipment from each other. I've noticed that there is a lot of disinterest in buying a piece of equipment if someone on that forum will only accept a money order for payment.

If I feel like my circumstances force me to sign up for paypal, do you have any suggestions of the right way and the wrong way to sign up for paypal and to make a paypal payment and receive a paypal payment ? Or do you have a suggestion for a website that has that type of advice that I should read ?

It is still possible to buy without creating a Paypal account. ^^^

If you decided to sign up for a Paypal account. Just go to Paypal website and sign up for a personal account. If you are using Paypal for buying only then just enter your credit card info through "My Account >> Profile >> Add or Edit Credit Card".

If you plan to sell (receive money) as well then you'll need to input checking or savings account info in as well and optionally upgrade account to premier (so others can pay you using their CC through Paypal).

Afterwards just go to ebay, check out as you would. Select Paypal, log in using the email that you signed up with Paypal. Select credit card (Paypal will try to convince you to use your deposit account and/or BillMeLater instead, but just insist on using CC). You'll redirected back to ebay. Hit checkout and you are done.

Should you later decided to return the item, Paypal will simply refund it directly back to your credit card.

KEEP IN MIND --> Using your credit card on ebay or other website purchases through Paypal will be treated as purchase. However, if you use your credit card to fund your Paypal account it'll be treated as cash advance. So if you plan on sending money to another's Paypal account, use your checking/savings account to fund your Paypal account instead.
