I just became a member of NFCU and was looking to get a card from them next month.

Rethinking that now if it's going to cost me 20 points by reducing my AoYA to zero...

Reducing your AoYA to 0 months would result in a loss of the points you just gained... so yes, ~20 points not counting the inquiry and/or AAoA reduction.

11 month old account was opened 12/31/17, perhaps they're calling it 12 months for scoring purposes.

Yup, that account is 12 months old and the score increase you saw was mostly if not all from your AoYA moving from 11 months to 12 months.  I'm glad you figured this out.  You'll likely see similar gains on your scores from the other 2 bureaus.  I saw you mentioned your AAoA, but did you tell us your AoOA yet?

As mentioned above, TU shot up to 824 from 795.  Haven't checked EQ yet.  AoOA is 18Y.

AoOA is 18. Aggregate utilization is 1%. I would expect you should be over 800 already, even with AoYA less than a year?

What is the distribution of the utilization on individual cards?

High Bal Jan 2009 $116k on $146k limits 80% Util.
Oct 2014 $46k on $127k 36% util EQ 722 TU 727 EX 727
April 2018 $18k on $344k 5% util EQ 806 TU 810 EX 812
Jan 2019 $7.6k on $360k EQ 832 TU 839 EX 831
March 2021 $33k on $312k EQ 796 TU 798 EX 801
May 2021 Paid all Installments and Mortgages, one new Mortgage EQ 761 TY 774 EX 777

Re: 22 point boost to 815

Been hovering in the 790's for longer than I can remember.  Auto loan down to 75%.

No utilization beyond 5% on any individual card, only 3 reporting a balance at most.

Oldest open account is 3.5Y.

Ok, the auto loan at 75% may be a reason keeping scores a bit low. As that comes down it should help, along with more time.

Congrats!
