TheTaxMan, What do you mean by a soft hit vs the hard stuff when referring to credit limit increases?

He means in terms of INQs. Hard being visible to anyone who pulls your credit; softs are not visible.

Re: My recommendation would

Can you ask a creditor if it will be a hard or soft pull before credit is pulled?

Sure! And maybe the CSR will know the correct answer and maybe even tell you the truth.

Stranger things have happened.

Your best bet, if you're interested in a CLI from a particular bank, is to do a search here. Click "advanced" up above, enter the bank name and cli inq, and that ought to bring up helpful posts.

Do remember that it can be variable by individual situations, and things are also changing with the rough economy.

The "highly trained" and "fully competent" account representative that makes promises about a hard or soft pull over the phone is not the person who keys the inquiry into your CR.

Inquiries based on a consumer request for new credit can legitimately be reported as hard inquiries by the OC.

If that is a major concern of yours, get it in writing first.

Do hard vs. soft inquries hurt that bad?  If I applied for a CLI and another CC what would be the best way to manage the inquiries...i,e. should I do them both at once or spread them out?
