AoA and authorized user

I am in rebuild--chpt 13 discharged. I have 7 (unsecured) CC, higest CL $2800.00 and 1 Installment w/Penfed which is a $400.00 secured loan. My oldest card now is <1 year..once the others drop off from discharge. My utilization is at 1%. Current Fico scores----Trans-635      Eq--650     Ex--645

Will adding me as authorized user on a card that is 7 years old, perfect history and their score is 800 help my file with AoA and ultimately my scores?.....they do not live with me so address is different and I heard that can make a difference as Fico made some changes since authorized user game was getting abused---

Re: AoA and authorized user

You have enough cards and mix for your credit to grow.

It just takes time !

About half of the CU;s and Banks require SS# for one to be added as AU, results from the other half will be less than stellar for you being found.

For some credit models it will help, however when you ask for more credit (card or loan) it usually is thrown out the window.

Kind of like borrowing a friends sports car to impress a date.   Easy to figure out it is not real

Re: AoA and authorized user

Thanks for the reply,

So, I am hearing you say, unless its a card that asks for my SS to be added as a AU, its pointless?......or are you saying that its just a pointless endeavor period, as being a AU on a card that has 7 years of history will not effect my AoA. FYI--the card is a Citi card, if that means anything

Re: AoA and authorized user

There is an AU anti-abuse algorithm. No one knows for sure how it works. The algorithm can discount cards even if your SS was provided, it can discount cards even if you have the same last name or same address. It is a mystery and you don't know until you try it.

If the card you are being added to is older than your oldest card (and it isn't an American Express card) it will help with aging metrics. Unless the card has high utilization it isn't going to have any serious negative effects from being added to it.

Imo, AU cards only hurt if they are younger than your oldest card or if utilization skyrockets. In the case of utilization increases, just remove yourself as an AU and all is good.

"So, I am hearing you say, unless its a card that asks for my SS to be added as a AU, its pointless?"..

Not necessarily, however it can be hit and miss.  If they ask for SS#, it will work.   The person that would be adding you should log on and see if Citi ask for SS# or just name and address.  If they ask for SS# you are in like flint. If not you can just wait and see if it works, just note that he/she might have other cards that ask for SS, and might work better.

"or are you saying that its just a pointless endeavor period, as being a AU ?"

Again personal point of view.  If one inflates there Fico score it might look good to gain 12 points from being an AU, however when needing a loan or new card it will be seen and not be of much use.

"a card that has 7 years of history will not effect my AoA. FYI--the card is a Citi card, if that means anything"

With 6 new cards (average 6 month, 6 cards over 1 year) and one 7 year old, it will add 10 months age to total average.  Not an expert on age gain but by guess 10-15 points max.   Others will have better numbers.

Every profile is different and YMMV, i'm actively testing this as we speak with a positive outcome (thus far).  I'm aware my credit boost may be discarded during mortgage consideration but then again i hear cases where some LO (loan officers) don't care - again YMMV.  Here's my output.

https://ficoforums.myfico.com/t5/Rebuilding-Your-Credit/Real-talk-Does-an-authorized-user-tradeline-...

*Disclaimer* YMMV - though these numbers seem appealing they could all change as i'm actively witnessing my scores upate quite frequently due to my recent BK13 discharge.  Not recommending everyone run and get AU but rather excercise caution and carefully study your credit profile.

Quick Update - Let's see how this goes next 30days:

  • 8/27/21 [TU] 17pts+
  • 8/26/21 [EX] 24pts+
  • 8/26/21 [EQ] 21pts+

Additional Data Points

  • Age of Most Recently Opened Accounts = 9mos (EQ,EX,TU)
  • Avg Age of Accounts = (EQ 9.4yrs)(TU 11.1yrs)(EX 5.10yrs)
  • Revolving Util = 2%
  • Lates = between 8-15 /30 day lates because of BK 13 over 5yrs OLD.  Recently discharged and will dispute in the coming weeks after dust settles.  Never late on any accounts prior to BK 13 but, for some odd reason 1mon after BK most of my accounts were tagged with 30day lates.
