Balance Decrease = Score Decrease?

So, I got an alert today which says that my credit card balance decreased by 55% which lead to a 6 pt drop in my score. Does this sound right? If I am paying off my credit card balance, why is my score dropping instead of increasing? Please hep me understand... Smiley Frustrated

Do you only have the one credit card? Also it could be something else that went on in the "background" on the reports that you wouldn't typically receive an alert for (i.e. a 30 day late).

Thanks AlleyCat88. I have two cards and both are paid on time every month since 2011.

Re: Balance Decrease = Score Decrease?

If you are speaking of myfico alerts ... they are not reliable to pin point the reason of a score increase or decrease. There is something in the background happening that decreased your score. Like a hard pull, a collection update, etc.

Myfico will give you an alert of an account change then at the same time show you a point change but they are not necessarily directly related.

Re: Balance Decrease = Score Decrease?

Same thing happened to me today. Balance decreased 100% and my score went down 12 points! It is really weird. It was a department store CC that I've been paying for 18 months (it was a 0% financing promotion) and this month, I have paid it off.

Thank you Jackielee3178! Now that you say this, I think the drop might be the result of an HP.
