Can disputes drop Fico Score?

I recently made some online disputes on both my TU and Exp credit reports--it looked like there were duplicate negative accts. I am in the process of waiting the 7 years for the negatives to drop but per my reports it looked like the credit agencies were adding the OC amts to the CA amt for the same acct. It looks like I owe double the amount so I disputed this. I admit I find the entire process of credit scoring and reporting heavily weighted in favor of the creditors and not the consumers, otherwise the system wouldn't be so difficult to navigate. Now I am concerned that the disputes will drop my already bad score even lower. Is this correct and if so, how long till the disputes no longer affect my scores. Most of the bad accts are scheduled to drop off in 2012. Thanks in advance and I hope my question makes sense.

Re: Can disputes drop Fico Score?

Accounts that are in dispute remain almost nuetral in the FICO scoring calculation.  When the account is no longer in dispute then the account will be fully factored into your FICO score.

Re: Can disputes drop Fico Score?

I'm hoping that you didn't wake a sleeping bear.  Depending on the age of ALL of the accounts (OC and CA), the information may be verified and the "reported date" would be updated from like six years ago to a more current date.  I think that may bite cha.

Re: Can disputes drop Fico Score?

I thought that the seven years was computed from the DOFD. I am not disputing the OC accts, I am just disputing why they show up TWICE on my report. It's all the same account that ended up in collection. They are both scheduled to drop off at the same time. I just disputed them as being duplicates. Am I not understanding something about the process used? Confusing...

Re: Can disputes drop Fico Score?

During a dispute, CAs and PRs are scored normally as they always are. OC accounts are treated a bit differently. Specific components are not scored like the balance, CL and the payment history, but all others like the mix and length of history are scored. After the dispute concludes, there are times that a CA or OC will update in a way to cause a score change (e.g. added lates, status change, comments change, etc.). YMMV based on the update, if any.

Re: Can disputes drop Fico Score?

On my report when a collection agency "updated" the date of balance - it lowered my points by 4 and also seemed to have reduced my age of accounts by 1 month.  I went through my last report and this new one that had the reduced score and that is the ONLY differences I see.  Date Reported was updated.
