Closed account increased FICO Score by 6 (Optimal Number of Accounts?)

An account I had with Aspire Visa was included in my DMP. The account was not closed all the time it was enrolled contrary to the requirement. I was using the $2000 CL to help my UTL. After completing the DMP I requested that they remove the comment "Account managed by credit counseling service".

My request raised the flag and they close the account. My EQ FICO score increased by 6 points today according to SW, but they did not remove the comment. The account was AA on my TU, but I'm not sure if they did something to my EQ and EX files, but nothing is showing up.

I am now left with 4 CC total ( 2 MC and 2 Store cards) and 2 installment loans. Could the number 6 be the optimal number of open accounts? On EQ and TU reports, some of the characteristic of high achievers is that they have an average of 6 accounts.

Could 6 be the optimal number of account for me or in general?

Re: Closed account increased FICO Score by 6 (Optimal Number of Accounts?)

I doubt it - most people have 10+ accounts.....I believe FICO considers any credit profile with 5 or under accounts a "thin file" so I doubt 6 is considered optimum.

Did anything else on your report change? Utility? Account Birthdays? Hit a new average age of accounts?

Perhaps it is because the coding of the card is no longer active because it is a closed account you gained points.

Re: Closed account increased FICO Score by 6 (Optimal Number of Accounts?)

Utility actually went higher which should lower my score theoretically. AAoA remains the same and account age did not change either..

What  do you mean by the coding of the card?

I also have a Macy Visa that has not report yet. I just got that few weeks ago. My AAoA actually went from 4 yrs 2 months to 3 years + after adding two new accounts. I hope to hit 7 years oldest account in May and AAoA should be back up to 4 years by October this year. Collection account will also pass 1 year by May.

Hopefully by October this year my CR should get better and take me into 670-680 range. Right now EQ is 639 and TU is 638.
