Credit building strategy question

One more question for me tonight.  When I recently pulled my credit myFico stated that "There is no recent activity on your credit cards".  Frankly up till recently I haven't used used my credit cards that much.

So...  Is it smart to shift most/all 'every day' purchases (groceries, gas, automatic monthly subscriptions) from my bank debit card to my credit cards?  Doing so will still keep my credit usuage easily below 20%.  Now of course the money that would otherwise be gone from my bank would now be used to pay off the credit cards each month in full.

Is this a good strategy?  Again... thank you in advance.

Re: Credit building strategy question

As long as you pay off the charges every month, it's an exellent strategy. It will build your credit, you can build rewards on your credit cards, and if someone steals your credit card number, you aren't liable for fraudulant charges. With a debit card, it's taken out of your account and you have to fight to get it back.

Awesome, thank you for the input.  How about running my car payment onto one of my credit cards too?

Re: Credit building strategy question

Typically you can't make car payments or any other credit payments for that matter on a credit card. It would be a bad idea anyway because you would be using credit to pay credit.

You do however want to shift as much of your daily expenses onto the credit cards as possible. That would be: Gas, restaurants, groceries, clothes, monthly subscriptions, etc.

Re: Credit building strategy question

I make a budget (revised starting feb, 2015), and now put everything but the rent on credit cards, they only take checks for rent, and I don't see the purpose of paying some service to send a check.

I only use the debit card for buying a small gift card so I can withdraw cash without ATM fee.
