I'm throwing my hands up in frustration for this latest go around with Equifax and Experian. I disputed an item in the "public records" section of al three CR agencies on July 11, 2014, a federal tax lien from August 2005...paid off in May 2006 and certificate of release of federal tax lien in June 2006....however, I requested a paper copy of the lien release in February 2008 and the item is being reported in Experian and Equifax as "released in February 2008, information is accurate and remains" but Transunion just deleted the same item yesterday in response to my dispute. **bleep**? This item is over 8 years old (paid in full and released) yet for some reason it's been re-aged with Experian and Equifax....and they're not budging...in fact, both Experian and Equifax sent me a nice letter in the mail informing me that they will no longer investigate this item and they consider it "closed" even if I send them another request...they're done.
I've refused to contact the IRS about this issue because my last conversation with them about this was, "oh well, not our problem" and "we don't have any control over what the credit reporting agencies report"...I'm deeply frustrated at this point.

Fresh Start program, IRS Form 12277 is what you need to get the paid loan withdrawn, after which can dispute it to successfully airstrike it easily.
You're right it's a bit hosed with the fudged date as it should've been gone in 2013 if you paid in 2006; however, take the easy route and just go through the Fresh Start process would be my recommendation: was easy and painless for my own Fed tax liens once paid, and sounds like an easier solution since it's available to you rather than getting the released date straightened out.
