Does having a credit card from Amex or Chase on your credit report raise or help your score more than one of the less known banks such as Mercury or Credit One?
No, the issuer of a credit card isn't scored.

what having major banks does do is make your credit profile look better, even if the score is the same
I would find it very difficult to believe that assuming all other factors are the same:
Amex - $1k
BofA - $1k
Chase - $1500
vs.
Credit One - $1k
Mercury - $1k
Milestone - $1500
the first credit profile wouldn't get bigger and better future limits and approvals compared to profile two
Banks differ widely on clis. I don't think the subprimes usually go big on clis, but neither does Capone or usb, in my experience. On the other hand, amex has always come through for me. I don't put a lot of spend on any of them. I got a $2000 qs 20 months ago, it's at $3200 today. I got a $6000 bce 16 months ago, it's at $27,000.
