Sure, late baddies fade as time goes on. But the fade is slow, very slow. A 60 late can hit you for around -40, and a 90 late can hit you for around -60 when they first occur, and the decline is slow as time goes by. It takes almost two years to cut those neg. points in half. And, with late payments accounting for over 1/3 of credit score, it is a death knell. Not instant death, but a lingering cancer. Not many can wait for over two years to erase the sins of the past, but FICO dont care. It lingers, like a swelliing prostate.
