I have a closed student loan reporting on all 3 bureaus, PIF and closed in 8/2021. It's 19 years old and my oldest account, anchoring my credit file age metrics.
I recently realized there is a duplicate of this loan on my TU report, except the duplicate reports as being open with a balance around $380 and a high balance of $830. B/L 46%. Same age, 19 yrs. Date of last activity reports as 4/2013. It reports as open and always paid as agreed.
Obviously this is not accurate, but it would appear to be working in my favor as my true AAoA is 3 years 4 months, but for TU it's 4 yrs 9 mos. My Fico 8 is 13 points higher for TU, even though TU has 3 inqs vs 0 for EQ.
Additionally, since this TL is not being updated by the data furnisher, it could remain open and in good standing forever, continuing to age even after the closed tradeline ages off in 2031, potentially benefitting my TU scores until the day I die.
So my questions are:
Has anyone else had a similar experience before?
Is there any potential downside that I'm not thinking of? Or is this just a lucky break for me?
Edit to add:
I have one other open installment loan, an SSL @ $250/$3150, B/L = 8%. So for TU, this takes my aggregate B/L up from 8% to 16%. So this would seem to be one downside. But on balance, for now, it's net positive scorewise on Fico 8.
Its helping if its your only installment loan. I you have any other loans open. I'd wipe it out with 46% reporting via dispiute.
Thanks for your post, @FireMedic1 .
So, as mentioned, I have an open SSL, so this is not my only open loan. But even with it reporting at 46% B/L, there is no doubt it's helping my score, because my TU Fico 8 is 13 points higher than EQ8, even though EQ has 3 less inquiries. It seems the age metrics more than make up for the higher B/L.
You've provided your answer..it's helping at the errant CB.

Right, as stated originally, I already knew it was helping my TU score. My question was whether there might be a downside that I haven't thought of.
So my question is still unanswered, but eventually I will just conclude that nobody else can think of a downside either.
