Well today I got an alert and this is the biggest score change in the past 12 months
...just lost 20 points for 28$ balance reporting. ??? Great that it's a Chase account so I will pay the balance now and see what happens if it reports 0 balance in a few days. Here I am almost positive that I will not get 20 points back for 28$ paid. Let's see how that will go ![]()
I believe that when dormant accounts start carrying a balance there's a brief penalty.

Thanks. The account is not really a dormant account as it has been used monthly but thanks to Chase reporting again when paid down it shows 0 balance. I suspect the penalty for too many accounts reporting a balance.
While I had balances report on 7 accounts last month and did not get any or much penalty at that time it was now account number 8 which reported a balance. If my guess is close then I should not get much of a ding in a few days for account number 9 reporting a balance. (Wish me luck) Since both of these accounts are Chase accounts they are perfect for my little unplanned test. I wondered why all of the sudden 1 account more reporting a balance made that much of a difference ? I would think it is the threshold of 50%
While TU and EX have 13 accounts on file and EQ has 14 accounts (1 closed) - 7 out of 14 is 50% so like this it was still working well last month but 8 out of 14 is over 50% and heavy ding yesterday. I will continue my test and truly hope that account 9 will not get me any additional ding as the last thing I want to do is spook lenders with my little test. As EX and TU are over the 50% already it would explain why I did not get a score drop there for the same reporting. All this of course only my guess as Fico is way to complex to understand.
Once two more accounts report a balance I will start to pay down and see at which point it does no longer matter. My estimate is up to 50% only a small ding but once over 50% heavy hit. We will see if my guess comes close.
I just had an alert that my Expirian score increased 19 points due to paying $437 down on my credit card balance, which makes sense, but I also received another alert from Equfax that my score had dropped 20 points for the exact same reason, whicj I do not understand. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Welcome to the forum
How many accounts to you have on your EQ report? How many of these have a balance on them? How many 0 balance.

Well I just got a 14 point hit for paying off a $65 balance, so I can't win either way. Hope you get your points back. That never seems to work for me. I will keep watching to see what happens with you. Good luck.

Do you micro manage your accounts? Or do you let your accounts report the balances?

I find that if I leave a small balance report on 2 of my 6 cc accounts I get the best score. However, this month I paid off the $65 balance on one of the 2 cards and that cost me the 14 points. My Venture card has not reported yet, so I don't want to lose to many points and fall below my 800 scores that I worked hard to get. I know I am being picky, but that's the way I have been my whole life. ![]()

It is not picky but responsible...lol.. your score reaction is indeed a bit strange. Clueless here. Mine at least makes some sense. I have done the same with Fico 04 last year and lost 40+ points for reporting small balances on more than 50% of my accounts. I guess that is punishment for playing around with SW and my scores ![]()

Thats happened to me with Chase. I am not letting any account reporting as " Dormant" anymore. I use it and pay in full before statement cut and Chase and I happy.
