Can't be sure. Can you tell us more about the lates?
Would you describe the lates as things that did actually happen, but you were just trying to clean up your report and get some of your derogs removed if possible?
It's not unusual for the whole tradeline to be deleted after you dispute something about it. That's actually a technique some people use to try to get closed tradelines removed from their reports. If the mortgage is still open the tradeline will probably reappear when the next payment is reported.
That's the risk you take, which is why you should only dispute legitimately inaccurate entries.
Hi Bsal. It sounds as though the lates were real. In other words, you really were late on making payments -- the information on the report is true.
As Captool points out, the dispute process is there to help a consumer correct something untrue on his report. When a consumer disputes many true pieces of data on his report, it can cause the original creditor or the CRA to regard his disputes as "frivolous." (That's the term they use.) That's why the veterans on this site advise you to be careful in initiating disputes, and reserve it for the rare cases when you are confident that the disputed item really is untrue.
There are other strategies for getting derogs removed that do not involve disputes. Those include writing good will letters, asking the creditor if he might be willing to consider a pay for delete option, etc. You can learn more about them in the Rebuilding forum on this site.
Our friend ManyQuestions may have hit the nail on the head, however, in which case the tradeline may come back on in a few months, after the lender responds to the CRA and tells him that the lates were real. Your best strategy is to lie low for a few months and hope that this happens. If it doesn't, discuss your problem in the rebuilding forum. You might be able to contact the original creditor, and humbly ask that the tradeline be added back.
Very best wishes....
