Experian score keeps decreasing but Equifax is going up?

I monitor my scores monthly and am becoming frustrated. I have been paying more than what I owe on bills (about $24,000 in debt which includes student loans and a car). My scores have been increasing nicely, but lately have been dropping. My Experian this month went from 671 to 660, but my Equifax went from 647 to 654. I have not applied for a card in two years, there are no derogatory items listed and no sign of identity theft. Does anyone know why this could be? It's so frustrating doing the right thing and still being penalized. Also, why would one score go down and one improve? Doesn't seem like it'd make sense if something fishy were up and I've been watching my scores like a hawk for two years. Anyone know who I could contact to get specific details?

Thanks in advance for any info.

Welcome to the forums.

One thing I will ask is where did you get your scores? No one has been able to pull their own Experian FICO score since February of 2009. Creditors can pull Experian and also there is a CU in Pennsylvania that supplies that information to it's members only. You can only buy true FICO scores at a few places. One place is here at myfico. I suggest you do an internet search for "myfico discount codes" to save a little money. You can also purchase your Equifax score at www.equifax.com (If you look hard enough) and your Transunion score at www.transunioncs.com.

I have been using CreditKeeper. They charge $10 a month and show inquiries and accounts open, etc. It's just so frustrating to see that nothing negative is going on, but my scores are not reflecting it. I know I'm in a lot of debt but it has significantly decreased and my scores have been improving until these past few months.

The reports you get there are accurate but none of the scores are FICO scores and do not compare or correlate in any way to FICO scores. I just want to make sure you understand that.

Hi eeyorerockz,

Awwww.  Haven't thought about eeyore for a chunk of time.

I buy my Equifax FICO and my TU FICO scores here at myfico.com.  It's easy and I like the format the the reports and scores, along with the score simulator.  You can google discount codes before you purchase.

I'm also a fan of purchasing scores at myfico.com/12 but that takes a chunk of courage.  You wll see your reports and scores, along with the four negative reason codes that your lenders see.  Some folks (like me - the first time) totally flip out.  Someone will probably tell me not to scare the bejeebers out of newbies - but it's good to know about.  Just have a gallon of your favorite flavor of ice cream on hand to help you recuperate.
