FICO Scoring

Hi All -

I just converted my Citi Diamond Preferred card to the Citi ThankYou Preferred card to take advantage of the global chip technology since I travel a lot internationally.  My Citi Diamond Preferred card had a CL of $7,800.00.  The new Citi ThankYou Preferred card supposedly does not have a pre-set spending limit.

Will loosing the $7,800.00 CL negatively impact my score?  Notably, the limits on my remaining accounts range from $1k - 2.5K.

Re: FICO Scoring

FICO doesn't care about your credit limits. A person with a combined CL of $1000 has an equal chance of someone with a combined limit of $100,000 per FICO. So reducing your CL alone won't hurt. However, FICO does care how you use the CLs. If you are carrying balances on your other cards, then naturally your overall utilization will increase and that can hurt. If util was in check prior to this change, then your FICO wouldn't be impacted from that alone. The only other considerations outside of util would be a new TL, if any (most creditors will only change the info within the TL due to a PC so likely no worries) and the inquiry, if any.

Re: FICO Scoring

Thanks for the response.  That is what I was mostly concerned about; my overall utilization.  Having the $7,800 CL significantly helped my overall utilization.  I will focus on reducing the balances on my remaining credit lines to avoid a spike in my overall utilization.  Truly, I want to mitigate any FICO score impacts as a result of this PC.

Correct, this is my third time changing to a different Citi product.  In the past, Citi has simply updated the TL.

Thanks for the info and quick response.
