No credit card required
Browse credit cards from a variety of issuers to see if there's a better card for you.
I have had My FICO for years and sweat everytime I check and see my scores are FAIR. I found this forum site but get a bit overwhelmed with all the information. Is there a way to be guided step by step, I know that sounds childish but honest!
The first few steps are identical for everyone. Here's a simple version:
From there, roads diverge depending on the information in the reports. Some people have Fair scores because they have thin files, without a lot of information. Perhaps they only have one or two credit cards and no other loans. Some people have Fair scores because they have missed payments. Some people have Fair scores because they have filed for bankruptcy or have charge offs. Some people have Fair scores because they max out their credit cards every month, so their balances are really high (maybe even 100%). Which takes us to step 3:
3. Come back, tell the people here what you found, and ask for help.

Well the first step you have already done and that's stating your goal and finding this forum.
There is a great amount of information and way too much to digest in a short amount of time but that is just the same as improving your credit. It's not a sprint it's a marathon and it all takes time.
You should join a few monitoring services such as Credit Karma, Wallet Hub, don't be too concerned with the scores given because they are Vantage scores and most creditors are only concerned with Fico scores.
The great thing about them is they give you suggestions and advice on how to improve your credit (almost in a step-by-step manner).
They have helped me tremendously along with this forum.
For Example:
They may show you if you pay down a certain balance you may receive x-amount of points.
If you need to work on your credit mix (revolvers, store cards, installment accounts) for points.
They may show you what's needed for your credit utilization to increase your score.
They show you how each move affects your credit scores.
They show you your age of accounts and how they affect you.
They show you how your inquiries affect your credit and when they will drop off.
What to do about negatives on your report.
Possible pre-approval opportunities.
Etc.
Basic things that will help:
Paying bills on time every time.
Keeping Utilization low.
Not generating too many inquiries and new accounts in a short period (3-6 months) of time.
Not getting any negatives (7 years is just too long to suffer).
Take it slow, check here often, and be patient.
Good luck
