Help Understand The Drastic Difference in FICO scores

Hey all,

I'm having a little trouble understanding the difference in FICO scores from what you get with free credit monitoring from credit cards, and what they give you when you apply.

Long story short, my 7th statement for my Discover Secured card cut on the 16th. I've been checking periodically to see if it's graduated or not. For fun, I decided to go to Discover's pre-qualify page and see if I would pre-qual to see if maybe that was an indicator of pending graduation. Probably a stupid reason but it's only SP so I didn't care.

So I've seen this often. The FICO score they gave me, was drastically different from the ones I get monthly. This is what my app denied me for:

Type of credit score FICO
Your credit score 624
Date January 19, 2020
Scores range from a low of 300 to a high of 850
Key factors that affected your credit score were as follows:
SERIOUS DELINQUENCY
% OF BALANCE TO HIGH CREDIT ON BANKING REVOLVING OR ALL REVOLVING ACCT
LENGTH OF TIME ACCOUNTS HAVE BEEN ESTABLISHED
TOO MANY INQUIRIES LAST 12 MONTHS

So Discover just gave me an updated FICO 8 score 3 days ago of 643. Not only that, but my Revolving Utilization is at 34%. Nothing's changed in the last 3 days. They also gave me a green status for having a total of 10 accounts and 0 missed payments. Also a green status for 8 years as my length of credit. So if in their Fico scorecard everything looks great and my score is 643, why is everything so bad from the application pull? This isn't just Discover, I see this on ALL apps. I know some cards give you vantage scores or estimations but this is a real fico score. Even when I log into experian it's higher than what they always pull.

So why am I getting such a negative rep but being told every month things are good?!

@Anonymous It depends on the credit bureau used to evaluate your application.

The FICO score provided by the Discover Credit Scorecard is based on TransUnion data, while Discover pulls Experian FICO 8 score when you use the "Discover Prequal Offers" page.

Further down in the denial notice should state the credit bureau that was soft pulled when you made the application.

Thanks for that! Even still though, I log into Experian all the time and the FICO score they give me is higher than what’s being pulled. Why is that?

Re: Help Understand The Drastic Difference in FICO scores

If I understand on 1/16 Discover showed your FICO 8 score as 643 and today you note a score of 624?  Are you sure the 624 is a FICO 8 score and do you know if it's from the same bureau?  What date is associated with you 643 score (not what date received it, but what date is noted). I don't know what bureau Discover card holders receives but I thought I read it was different than the free site that can be used for non card holders, which is EX FICO 8.  You denial notice doesn't state which model or which bureau of FICO for the pre-qual denial which could also be different from what Discover provided on the 16th.

(EDIT - I see MaizeandBlue answered the which bureau question)

You stated your statement cuts on the 16th.  Are you sure nothing changed from when you received your score on the 16th vs today?  Is it possible your Discover or other cards had a balance change that could now be reported (as of today) that wasn't reflected on the 16th score, since it would be too soon for it to report on the 16th when you received your score?

Regarding your "green status" that is what many here call fluff stuff provided by a CMS.  It may make you feel a certain way about your scores but may not mean much. You have a "green status" for payments but your denial states you have a serious delinquency.  Regardless of the language used on CMS - good, very good,  excellent and/or green status (fluff stuff) your serious delinquency is suppressing your scores along with the other denial statement of high card balances. Although you may see some change as delinquencies age, a serious delinquency will hurt you the full 7 years (as will any delinquency in my opinion, but not as significantly as a 60 or 90 day late).  I'll let someone else quantify the point impact but it's significant.  Also noted in your denial reasons is length of time accounts have been established and too many INQ.  Seems to indicate new accounts which will lower your score along with but separate penalty from the too many INQ impact.

In my opinion this is why your scores are in the mid 600's (forget the fluff stuff).

Actually the score provided with your statement is a Transunion FICO 8 score, while the score they pull from the prequal page is an Equifax FICO 8.

Re: Help Understand The Drastic Difference in FICO scores

In short, it seems like I was mixing scores up. Discover is giving me a TransUnion score but pulling from Experian for apps (weird). I logged into experian and my score refreshed and matched what they pulled.

In other news, my Discover card secured early this morning! Logged in and CL went from 1200 to 2000 and the CLI button works! No official letter yet.

Also, my Derog is about a 6 year old CO from Wells Fargo. Other than that my utilization rate is 10% on the experian side so it was weird that they said my balances are too high.

You need to give us more detail as to exactly what scores you're looking at, where you're getting them from, and when you're getting them.
