My FICO is currently over 770 and I like to keep it that way. But recently, I have a charge that I am disputing with a car rental agency who claims I owe them, and is in the process of forwarding me to a collection agency. So my question is, at my rating level, how much of a negative effect can this cause?
My TU credit score went from 670 to 770 when I had my collections removed. And my EX went from 654 to 745.
So, in my experience, anywhere from 80-110 points depending on the rest of your profile.
80-110 points isn't a bad estimate for a recent major negative like a collection. If you're talking an aged one falling off, that number drops to around the 60-80 point range, depending on profile.
How big of a charge are we talking? I would explore other alternatives before letting it go to collections, including escalating it through their customer service management or on social media.

It is actually hard to tell. There depends a lot on if you have a solid history already to show that you are a good credit borrower. People with thin files or ones that have little age will take larger hits. Also there is a chance that certain charges will be exempt from the algorithm. For example any collection under $100 falls under nuisance charges and has no effect for FICO 8. For FICO 9 anything that is paid off is also exempt or has lower penalties. Generally a healthy report that is solid will take a 50-75 point hit if the collection slams into it. If you have a weak or unstable report then expect 100-200 points loss. Also be aware that collections reporting are not the only thing that will leave a mark. Any 30, 60, 90, 180, and 270 lates for that account can also show up and leave a mark.
Well my current credit score is above 770 points and this collection will be for $500. Any guess how much that will impact me negatively?
Thanks. Now how do I delete this thread?

This thread will live on indefinitely. It will slowly move down the page as it ages and nobody posts to it anymore but it will be here for years and years.
