I Relent

Well I guess it seems FICO does like to see you report a few balances on your reports. I was a little surprised to see a drop in my TU from 713 to 705 yesterday. I have an open auto loan so I have been trying to allow that and a couple of credit cards report each month. This past period I only showed a balance on my largest card showing just two open balances out of a total of 7 accounts. Previously I had allowed 2 credit cards and my Walmart charge (also my oldest open account)to report balances and the score was 713. I won't be so quick to pay before the reporting dates going forward. No use of credit cards was one reason for the score drop on page one of the report. I had let one card report so this reason seems a bit curious. I wonder how much letting Walmart report a balance a couple months ago had to do with the score jump from 706 to 713. Other than allowing 4 accounts out of 7 to report versus 2 of 7 this month there were no other changes to the reports. I hope this helps someone out there.

Re: I Relent

3 out of 7 (less than half) is where I would try to hit if I were you-

This is something I have been playing with this for several months-
I have 10 open CC(15 open TL's) (on my report)I can't allow more than 3 to report a balance. 8/15 open TL's.

Also starting to think mortgages are pulled out of this calulation in some way as well-

Re: I Relent

I usually let 3 or sometimes 4 report including my car loan. Tried a little experiment. Yet I hear people say their scores are highest when they let 0 accounts report. Very individual thing I imagine.

The best scores I've gotten were when I had only 1 (out of 5) CC report. Mortgage, HELOC. student loan, one CC out of 8 total open TL's. TU finally had something pleasant to say on that one.

If the magic number is half the open TL's with balances, I'm going to need to pick up one or two more cards before I get a car loan! Smiley Tongue

Needless to say my utilization is extremely low between less than 1% and at the very most just shy of 2%. Obviously all the new accounts I picked up the past 12 months have really put a lid on my scores. I have done a lot of pruning the last 3 months combining and closing and outright closing a lot of accounts. If I had to do it again I would have just kept my Cap One card open I think. It would be my lowest available line with 5K and no AF and my oldest open credit card. I was so psyched getting prime cards I got nuts. When ya got a hammer everything looks like a nail. Smiley Wink.

Re: I Relent

I have 16 cards. How many cards should I leave balance? Right now I am leaving a small balance only on 2-3 cards. Do I have to increase that to 5-6 cards since I have 16 Cards?

Re: I Relent

As far as I can tell, it's half or under of all your open credit, including loans (and maybe mortgage --Timothy is skeptical on that one), and be sure to let at least one report something. So you should be fine with the 2 or 3.

Always a good idea to keep things simple, or juggling your cards will become a full-time job! Smiley Very Happy

smallfry--If it benefits you, you may want to see if Cap One will re-open your cc. As your oldest open cc, it may help in ave age, ave revolving age, etc. Since the cl was over 5k, was this a platinum card? If so, it certainly wouldn't be viewed as sub-prime.
