Is a score over 850 possible???

I had kind of an odd deal happen over the weekend.  I assisted a co-worker in purchasing a new vehicle, mainly for moral support.  During the negotiating, the sales manager came in and basically informed my co-worker that he would like to have her apply for any loans that he needed in the future.  He went on to say that he had been in the business for many years and had never seen a credit score so high.  I was not suprised at that comment, as my co-worker is one of the most responsible people I know, however I was shocked the sales manager said that he credit score is OVER the maximum.  I do not know that the exact score was, but found his "over the maximum" comment interesting.

Anyone ever heard of a credit score over 850?

Never trust a salesman!! That line is part of a process of making you feel really good in order to seal the deal. The maximum, is the maximum because it's the maximum.

It is likely he was lying but it is also possible he is a moron and pulled a vantage score on a 950 scale and thought, wow they broke the FICO record.

He's a shyster, trying to get your friend to apply for a loan through the dealership. Maybe she was planning to pay cash or get a loan through a credit union? It was probably his way of flattering her and implying that she's guaranteed to be approved if she gets a loan through them.

I'd go with the Vantage hypothesis.

In my opinion your friend should consider buying somewhere else. Regardless of what score was obtained, the salesman is obviously doing an ego stroke in an attempt to close the sale. Your friends credit score is probably more than adequate to qualify for a low interest loan and, anything that this salesman says(after qualifying your friend) should center around getting your friend the best loan possible.

Car sales tactics are being driven/shaped and changed by the high cost of gas right now, and a buyer really needs to be aware of this when shopping around. Smiley Happy

Yeah, I walked off the lot on a salesman a few weeks ago. He was really kind of "oily". Can't describe it other than I had the strong urge to shower after meeting with him.

The place I eventually bought from had a nice enough guy, but was kind of cheesy. I called him on it and he toned it down. I saw a car I wanted for DD, test drove it and then told him that I wanted to make an offer. After I told him that I wanted to make an offer, he says "okay, I asking for your business, can we do business? Do you want to make an offer?" I told him that he didn't have to try to oversell me or anything--I like the car--just be yourself. Geez, I felt like leaving at that point, but I was all tuckered out from car shopping and just wanted to get a good deal on the vehicle that I saw.
