Just when I thought I was doing great!

Just when I thought I was doing great then bam!

Fico dropped 14 points due to me paying off an auto loan. I'm worried too due to the fact I actually paid off 2 total auto loans and the second auto loan hasn't hit. myFICO Experian is now 691. I'm worried as I just was given a $9,000 credit limit on American Express and don't want them to drop my available balance. I've been with Amex for a few years now and have never missed a payment!

Re: Just when I thought I was doing great!

You're worrying for nothing, lenders, including Amex, will not AA you due to a slight drop in scores because you paid off your car loans, just continue to pay your bills on time and you'll be just fine.

Re: Just when I thought I was doing great!

All that happened was that you lost the FICO scoring bonus for having an installment account in your credit mix. While your balance was reporting less than 8.9% or the original loan balance you received an additional bonus. No worries, Amex understands these drops.

Your FICO credit scores are not just numbers, it’s a skill.

Do you have anyone in your family who is or was in the military?  If so, Navy Fed has a product that woud get you all the points you lost back.

Re: Just when I thought I was doing great!

That is a fluctuation...not a reason to be concerned over creditors giving you the boot. Your score could do that from a significant change in utilization...it's not an indicator of a 'problem'.

Re: Just when I thought I was doing great!

If anything, your payoff may be seen as a net positive because you reduced your debt-to-income ratio. A low or lowered DTI generally yields good results in the credit world and Amex takes DTI seriously. Don't worry.

Re: Just when I thought I was doing great!

As the other said, Op you are doing the right thing paying on your bills. Don't let the Fico scoring system make you feel down about your good habits. Amex would understand. When you lose a decent amount of points due to negatives showing up is when to be concerned.
