New to this...

Hey yall!

I am a college student in Atlanta, GA interested in obtaining the highest credit score I can before graduating and emerging completly from under my parents' wings. Smiley Happy

I have a credit card with WaMu that I have been paying more than the monthly minimum on since opening the card last August, unfortunalty I cannot say the same for the cards I have had in the past (Macy's and USAA). My parents ended up paying off those cards but not until it may have been too late. Both accounts are closed and it has been atleast a year since those cards have been active, but I am afraid that they may be affected my credit for awhile. I'm not sure.

The WaMu card has a high balance (~$ 2,100) but I asked WaMu to see if I would eligible for a lower interest rate to help me reduce this as soon as possible.

I guess what I am getting at is that I would like some 'Plain English' advice as to how I can increase my credit score.

Thanks so so much guys! You all seem extremly friendly and knowledge and I hope that this doesn't burden anyone too much!

Welcome to the forums!

Have you pulled your reports and scores from MyFICO?  It would be a good idea to see where you're starting from before you can develop a "plan of attack."

What is the credit limit on your WaMu card?

Yes, that's your first step, if you haven't already. Be sure to Google FICO coupon or FICO discount code to get at least 15% off.

Even before you see the reports, though, your first order of business is paying that card way, way down. Smiley Wink

Thanks yall so so much!

Credit limit on the WaMu card is $2500 and at one time it was maxed out BUT like I said I am paying it down as much as I can as quickly as I can.

I have looked up my credit scores so I know where I stand on that too. Smiley Happy

I will keep you updated- I will need some advice on financing my first car in a few months (hopefully)
