Nuisance debt question

Hi, I paid off the balance of a loan I had (about 5k) but forgot about the insurance I took out with it (about $3 a month). My credit union sent me a statement that was buried in my spam folder saying I owed about $5. I didn't see it and neither did I expect to have a balance. They have not sent another statement until last week's when they charged me $60 in late fees and reported me for a late payment on, what was including late fees, $41. Obviously a bit harsh for what was around $5 but aside from that (views on contesting welcome as well)  - my credit score dropped 80 points when this hit. I was under the impression that fico 8 didn't take notice of nuisance debt under $100. Advice appreciated.

Re: Nuisance debt question

FICO 8 ignores collections that are for under $99.  But lates are a different kind of derog, and FICO 8 does not ignore any lates.

I'd attempt goodwill requesting with the CU right away. Phone first, then a letter to the EOnand if no go, saturation method.
