Yeah, you completely missed the point of my last post. (hint: it wasn't about points and thresholds)

ok then yes if that's the case I really have no idea what you were trying to say
the question was asked about a threshold and point loss? I said it depends, and you said no it doesn't. So I'm definitely lost if you weren't taking about points or thresholds

@Varsity_Lu wrote:Here's my point: @FICOdawg's passing comment that sparked this dumpster fire was completely correct and accurate. He wasn't wrong.
Of course he was wrong, because above 50% on an individual card if no aggregate threshold points are crossed (which was the case for OP) doesn't "bite you hard" like he said. Can it impact your score? Sure. But "bite you hard" by any reasonable definition of the term, absolutely not. Hell, one can argue that aggregate utilization crossing 50% doesn't "bite you hard" if your definition of that is over (say) 15-20 points.
Can anyone explain to me what @Varsity_Lu was talking about? I'm totally lost and I want to give the best advice possible
(for anyone willing to help the confusion started when he said "please give me a yes or no answer, not a paragraph, does going over 50% INDIVIDUAL utilization hurt your score)
I said it depends but mostly yes, because he didn't want a long answer. He didn't specify which model, account with balances, total dollar amount balance. Etc . And I Didn't want to give a long answer to respect his wishes.
then he said no it doesn't depend, and he went on to say "he is wasn't talking about thresholds or score drops" and that I "missed his point"

I'm just as confused as you are, @SRT4kid93. Going over 50% utilization on a single card won't universally result in a score drop though, as it depends on the rest of the profile in question. Perhaps someone already has X cards above 50% already, where adding another wouldn't incur another penalty already being realized (assuming, of course, one remains within the same aggregate utilization range).

I would expect taking aggregate utilization over 50% vs under 5% to cost 25-35 points on a clean scorecard with total point loss on Classic Fico 8 likely 35-45 points. Other balance reporting factors contribute to overall point loss being high card utilization and likely high dollar balance. Of course, if TCL is under $4k. a high reported aggregate balance may not come into play which reduces point loss potential.
Ok well at least it's not just me. I kinda felt stupid like I was missing something.
wish he took the time to try to explain my misunderstanding instead of just saying "you missed my point" and leaving me guessing. It's just one of those things that bothers me.
like when someone says "I have something to tell you" but then they say "never mind" just drives me nuts

A couple things:
1. The question was does a threshold exist at (or around) 49% for high card utilization? My answer would be yes although some say the threshold is 49.5% or 50%. No more information was requested. (The hidden point, imo, is limiting responses to information that is requested without expanding into other areas). He can clarify, or not, as is his prerogative.
It is true that many profiles won't observe a point loss when highest card UT crosses above 29% and/or 49%. That can be scorecard and profile dependent. It may be semantics but, I'd say the threshold still exists but was given no weight in these cases. I may launch into other thresholdd for newer members but, not with long time established members unless requested.
2. What started the dumpster fire were the responses to Ficodawg - imo.
I would have posted to the OP that "high, 62% card utilization coupled with the elevated aggregate balance would account for your score drop". "That's my experience and matches other poster data I have seen." *** done, end of post ***
I suspect Ficodawg was thinking about aggregate utilization but, it matters not. There is no value add pushing for clarification. No need to speculate what he was thinking or to respond to his post directly. His comment was to the OP, iirc.
Thank you , you answered the general question as it should have been answered .
thank you !
that makes perfect sense. He was asking if that threshold exists not if you will lose points
in that case, yes the threshold exists for every profile. it doesn't matter if it's F8, F9, Trans Union, Experian, clean scorecard, mature etc.
if you will lose points and how many points you will lose is dependent on many factors
