I have one derogatory account (not a collection) on my TU report. It states "Paid after charge-off". This record will remain on my report until 2012-03. My question is how much of a bump in score might I receive once that last remaining baddie is gone? On the one hand, it's already 6 years old, so it shouldn't have that much of an effect, but on the other hand, I'd like to think having pristine credit vs average credit will make a big difference. Hopefully someone else had a similar experience and can chime in. Thanks!
Different types of adverse items decline in scoring impact at much different rates. For example, many notice that the impact of 30-day lates appears to become minimal after a period of around 2 years, while the same is not true for major monthly delinquencies. Their continued impact, while also declining over time, is noticed by many to remain over the full 7 year CR inclusion period. Some observe that 60-day lates appear to be scored at the less significant impact of a 30-day late after a similar period of approx 2 years. Its a complicated scoring algorithm that changes in ways that are unknow to consumers as their bucketing profile changes.
Charge-offs are one of the more serious major derogs, in that they are a creditor statement that they considered your debt to have become "uncollectible." As such, their impact apparently does not deteriorate at as significant a rate.
Just how much is known only to the FICO gods. That is the bad news. The good news is that once it does drop from CR inclusion, it will most likely have a more significant impact than the exclusion of a monthly delinquency. You can still probably expect to see some score improvement.
Once all delinquencies are excluded from your CR, you are then categorized as having a "clean" payment history, which places you into a better scoring category, or "bucket." As you have surmised, that can, apart from the individual impact of the derog, produce additional opportunity for overall score improvement.
So, in my opinion, yes, moving to a "pristene' payment history should have its own beneficial future impact.
Aside from the severity of the baddie, the age of this OC account factors in too. If this account is older than your other accounts and/or helps your average age of your accounts, then there's always a chance you can lose points if deleted, albeit not common. DW had a paid CO disappear last year due to hitting 7 years old. IIRC, EQ dropped around 20 points and TU increased 20. It was her oldest revolving and older than her AAoA by a few years.
Darn. Yours falls off around the same time mine does. This is the last baddie on my report and it is a medical collections so it won't affect my AAoA. I am sitting at about 700 and am hoping for atleast 20 points. I have been good and when it falls off I will have 4.5 year long report and a 2.5 year AAoA. Make sure you let us know what happens when it does fall off though.
I figured I would update this thread in case someone cares. In the 5 months since I last pulled a score, two things have changed:
1) Chase offered me 0% for 12 months on my card, so I took out $6500 on a $9000 CL.
2) The last derogatory account (120 Day/charge off) that was on my Equifax credit report has fallen off.
I pulled my Equifax score from MyFico, and I'm proud to say it's now 778. So I estimate that the derogatory drop off gave me at least a 60-80 point increase in credit score! I was worried that nearly maxing out my Chase card would (temporarily) wreck my score until I paid it down, but I guess since my total utility is only 24%, it did not hurt that much. Maybe it would have hurt a lot more if I was still in the bucket of people with derogatories? I guess we will never know.
When EX removed my only negative item, I got an 82 point score bump.
Congrats!
That is AMAZING!! I have one lingering collection I just resolved with a PFD. I cant wait to see what my score does. May I ask, how recent was your collection? Mine is 2009.
Lets us know how much did it go up,i'm deciding if i should pay some old, collections (more than 5 years old) but i don't know if that will affect my score even more, sighs,it's slowly improving.
Getting my baddies off improved my score almost 100 points. I hope you have same results. I had two with multiple lates that were removed.
