Hi all. My mom has crazy APR's and pretty much at limit on all of them, so she can't get any breathing room, well there is a chance but we're not sure yet (medical/social program to reduce APRs for those who are going through hard times).
I have some cards, so I had an idea to add her as my AU. I am not worried about her spending my cards. Thing is my accounts are under 1 year, and are as follows. I'm curious which ones make sense to add. Her score is about 650.
BOA MC (30-50% util)
BOA VISA (50-80% util) //these two can vary, I have cash I just don't want to use it on cc yet, as I have 0 APR for awhile.
DISC IT 0% util
CAP 1 0% util
CITI 0% util
First Bankcard 0% util
Do all of these report for AU? Which ones are harder to do? Never done AU so curious about any cons as well. Thank you
I don't see adding her as an AU will be of much help "breathing room" wise. It will not reduce her APRs, you can not do any balance transfers at promo rates for an AU. The only benefit I see, is adding her to Discover or Capital One (that I know both report across all 3 bureaus), whichever is the highest line of credit but with a zero balance, that will only reduce her overall utilization score wise.
Can you possibly get her to sock drawer her cards away with no temptation or implusive purchases, and chip away at the balances (start with highest APR one or if they are basically the same, start with the smallest balance one and do the snowball effect.
Yes Dolly that's the idea - she's not using the cards now. But i want to also increase her util so she can get something with lower apr (loan) sooner.
You might sneak past a computer that way if it's an instant approval, but if it goes manual review, they'll probably factor out the AU line. I was thinking you were gonna carry her spend for a while as she pays down her cards. That's what I'm doing for my mother-in-law. Stuck her on the Discover and cap1 in case she overspends as they are least likely to AA. Confiscated her cards so she can't use them while paying them off. Works great and she's too scared to really use my cards so she keeps spending in check.
