Re: What DOES it take to reach 800? Age?

DH's FICO's:

EQ - 816
TU - 817
EX - 816

At the time of these scores in May (haven't got more recent ones), he had longest: 18 years, 11 months; average: 6 years; 1% util; no baddies, except a 30-day on EX from April 2004 that shows as delinquent, because it was the last payment made while trying to close the account.

Current mortgage; no current open installments; 2 CC's.

So 6 years average age seems to be all you need, given the other points.
* Credit is a wonderful servant, but a terrible master. * Who's the boss --you or your credit?
FICO's: EQ 781 - TU 793 - EX 779 (from PSECU) - Done credit hunting; having fun with credit gardening. - EQ 590 on 5/14/2007

Re: What DOES it take to reach 800? Age?

I *just* hit 800 this month! My oldest tradeline was opened in 1991. No history of ANY lates, good mix of credit. My current  CC utilization is at 3%. I may have been there in the past, but only started to monitor credit as recently as 2 years ago.

I've learned alot from this board. Back in 2006, I checked my Fico scores, and saw that I was at 680. I freaked. I had assumed that since I paid everything on time, that my credit was perfect.  Smiley Surprised

I learned a BIG lesson about utilization!!

Re: What DOES it take to reach 800? Age?

Hmm.. Not sure major old age is the issue.

Exp-I just hit 805 with Experian this round of ficos. I have 7 accounts on my experian report. Four are open (2 credit cards, 2 student loans that are almost done),three are closed (credit card (oh crappyone),another student loan, car loan). Oldest account is 11 years, average age is 6 years. Those student loans boost my score mostly. One account I have, a new credit card, was in the last year. All in good standing, no lates. My Experian was lowest until the new account hit. I think my new card improved my utilization, as it reported a $7000 limit in addition to my other card with a high balance ($4500) reporting (good old Chase sig, sigh).

TU-768-One 30 day late from a paid off and closed student loan still with a year to go for it to fall. Everything else is the same as my Exp.

Equ-774. Complaints about my new account. And my inquiries show up here. I unfortunately have two.. one from the credit card (expected) one from the bank (WHAT!! It was for a checking account Smiley Wink) Everything else is the same as the exp report.

So I think to get to 800.. mix of credit, no recent inquiries and no lates, and low utilization. Long age doesn't seem so necessary, which makes me happy.

Re: What DOES it take to reach 800? Age?

There MUST be a minimum age somewhere to get to 800, as it only makes sense.   Maybe that is 10 years if all else is great.   But the closer you are to 20 oldest TL and 6+ avg age (like the myFICO comments say), then the closer you should be to 800.

Not much question that these are required:

-No lates on credit report (possible exception of 1 and only 1 30 day late at least 3 years old)
-Credit mix of at least 2 of the 3 major types (mtg, installment, revolving)
-At least 4 TL's
-Utilization below 5% (1-3% ideal)
-No new credit in last 2 years, and NO hard inquiries in last 12 months
-Avg age of at least 6 years
-NO public records

Feel free to modify above list with actual experiences.......but I think age is what closes the deal for 800, be it avg or oldest.

Re: What DOES it take to reach 800? Age?

Guys, this is a tremendous resource if information, thank you very much.

"-No new credit in last 2 years, and NO hard inquiries in last 12 months"

Now that's interesting. Though, I guess it does make sense. When I do finish applying in the near future I will sit on those cards for eons and let them grow with me.

Those are not required.  I hit 800 with 2ccs and an auto loan all less than 6 months old, and inqs for them as well
The slide from grace is really more like gliding
And I've found the trick is not to stop the sliding
But to find a graceful way of staying slid

Re: What DOES it take to reach 800? Age?

The role of the length of credit history seems to be unclear. But can anybody tell me how age and the comments in the reports fit together? bad = ? not good = ? good = ? very good = ? great = ? Personally, I'm at 'not good' after 2 years and 6 month. Well, I'm not born in the States and nobody cares about my 20 years excellent European credit history :-(

I think I can hit 800 with a higher UTI, new accounts in the last year along with their INQ, and an average age lower than 6.

The one I'm missing by the most right now is UTI, but when I get it down to 9% I'm almost certain there will be a big jump. I have one account at 75% and I think that is costing me several points. I won't be able to get my UTI that low until a month or two into '09 at the earliest.

Depends on your bucket. If in a bucket where age is not a factor, age won't really hold you back. Smiley Happy I think someone can do it with less, but pretty sure it can be done with oldest account 4 years and avg age 2.5 years for 800. But I think it can be down with as little as 2.5 years for oldest account if someone sets it up just right from the start. But for 2.5 years that's more like professional drag racing. Everything must be perfect right from the start with many trade lines all open with in the first 6 months, then no more inqs, no more new apps to let avg age get up to 2 years. With scores being so high in the first 2-4 years for some people I don't think history needs to be that old. Gotta love the newbie bucket!
