Re: What DOES it take to reach 800? Age?

My lowest score is 803, DH's is 804.  I've never had a mortgage or a car loan (he has both).  I have one new credit card in last 6 months.  For how to improve, my stuff says need a longer history (longest is 8 years because I'm from another country and have been here less than 10), his basically says he can't do anything to improve.

We did recently go shopping for a house and the mortgage broker freaked out that we both had scores in the 800s.  However, my car insurance tells me my score is not high enough to qualify for a break!  What does it need to be???

Normally 720 to 740.  But if they looked at just your credit, and if you have never had a car loan  and have no mortgage, then they have no installment loan history on you so they will be more picky
The slide from grace is really more like gliding
And I've found the trick is not to stop the sliding
But to find a graceful way of staying slid

Re: What DOES it take to reach 800? Age?

So is it possible that the only reason my EQ is 776 and not 800+ is because I opened a new credit card within the past month?

I have no missed payments.
Ratio of my revolving balances to credits limits: 1%
Oldest account: 17 years, 9 months
Average age of accts: 8 years

After opening that new account, I closed out another account, but that didn't show up on my EQ report yet.  Would that have a further negative impact?  The cc I closed out was less than a year open, so I imagine it shouldn't have hurt my average age, and since I closed one but opened another, I imagine that didn't hurt my credit limit total.

What do you all think?

(I should add that a few years ago, my FICO was above 800--up to about 820s apparently--before I took out a home equity loan.  I want to get it back up there!)

Re: What DOES it take to reach 800? Age?

I took my Equifax score from 653 to 806 in less than 3 years.  I carry low balances (less than 5% utilization on my cc's), have 5 installment accounts with balances, carry a mortgage that is now 12 months old.  No inquiries last 12 months.  No new credit last 12 months (although I passed 800 at 10 months).  7 late payments on one account that is now closed and paid off.  Last missed payment was Aug. 2004.

Oldest account history: 12 years
Average: 7 years

Re: What DOES it take to reach 800? Age?

In that case it appears that opening that credit card within the past month must have REALLY dinged me, because everything else on my record seems stellar.  You've got a history of late payments, but no new credit in the past year, so I'm guessing my new credit card's to blame.  I wonder when that will no longer hurt my score and my score will go back up?

Does that paid/closed negative tradeline still appear on your credit reports?

Re: What DOES it take to reach 800? Age?

Lots of new visitors on this thread --welcome!

Just one request: please post where you pulled your scores. Are they for-sure FICO scores, or did you get them from TransUnion or Experian or TrueCredit or CreditSecure or FreeCreditReport.com or all the other sources of FAKO's? (FAKO = non-FICO credit score = meaningless.)

If everyone isn't posting FICO scores (FICO EQ, FICO TU, FICO EX), then we're comparing apples to oranges to carburetors.

thanks!
* Credit is a wonderful servant, but a terrible master. * Who's the boss --you or your credit?
FICO's: EQ 781 - TU 793 - EX 779 (from PSECU) - Done credit hunting; having fun with credit gardening. - EQ 590 on 5/14/2007

My highest "carburetor" score is 905. It is a four barrel. Smiley Very Happy

Re: What DOES it take to reach 800? Age?

My sister's score is 810.  Have no idea why - she is on disablity with no real income.  She has old good tradlines (30+ years), but a big gap from her pre-/post- divorce credit debaucle (many bad tradlines that have since dropped off).  She has a government subsidized home loan and an American Express card.

We are still recovering from a BK7 in 03, due to a failing business.  Now - our scores are almost 700. We bought a house post-BK and sold it.  We have 2 cc's $7500 in credit with a total utilization <5%.  We have 3 vehicle loans.  Our post-BK payments have been stellar.   Hopefully in 2010 - the bad tradlines will drop and bring us above the magic 720.

It kills me that I've worked my butt off to pay ahead and extra, while the government pays part of my sister's mortgage - and her credit is better.  Don't get me wrong - I love my sister, I'm just a little resentful that I'm sitting at my desk 50 hours a weeks, knowing that she's sitting on the couch - reaping better benefits.
