What to do? BOA reports that I am disputing account and score drops 10 pts....

What's the best way to handle this situation?

Few weeks ago I looked at my credit report for the first time and saw that one of the accounts listed was a visa card from BOA which was reported as closed by them last year.

Since I did not recall ever applying for this card or ever receiving the card in the mail I called up BOA to figure out where this card came from. I believe what had happened was that when I went to BOA for my regular banking I was asked by a teller if I wanted a card.....which I usually say no thank you....but this time I said just send me some info in the mail....which this teller then must have took to mean I wanted the card.

Long story short...I called up BOA just to get the info....the credit analyst said it really wasn't effecting my credit score but if I wanted to I could dispute this account with the credit bureaus....which I decided not to do.

Few days later I get an alert from scorewatch saying my fico score had dropped 10pts and the reason was as follows:

Consumer disputes this account information
Credit card

Amount in H/C column is credit limit

The sad thing is this appears on my MASTERCARD and not the Visa card that I called about.

This is why I hate dealing with BOA CSReps. They almost ALWAYS SCREW UP...from the tellers to the people on the phone. Why would they report that I was disputing my card info when all I called in for was to find out some information.

I wonder how long it will take for them to straighten this out.

A dispute, especially in this case, isn't a bad thing.

The teller would have asked you more info about applying, than just asking if you want the card. Income and residency would have at least been asked and disclosures would have been passed along to you at the time. Moreover, you would have received a card in the mail.

Sounds like someone applied for credit in your name.

SW alerts are a funny sort. They'll sometimes list a score change that has nothing to do with the event that they listed. Disputing a closed account has no bearing on your score. The history is not removed by a dispute, so as long as the card remained AND it helped your overall history. Was it deleted? If not, then something else happened on EQ to impact your score. For example (I give this all the time), I once got a SW for a 20 point increase due to a new inquiry. The inquiry didn't increase my score, but rather something else happened. In this case, it was a baddie falling off that SW didn't mention.

The only worry I had about this situation was the fact that the dispute was reported to be on my MasterCard not my Visa card. My mastercard with them is my oldest line of credit besides my student loans while my Visa card is only two years old.

I just spoke to one of BOA ca with help from the back door number list and he reassured me that the latest credit report he was looking at had no disputes listed or anything negative reported on my card...so I still can't figure out why my score went down by 10pts :-(
