Worth Disputing and Would FICO Score Improve?

Beginning in 2007, I had a card from HSBC/Orchard Bank that later became a Capital One card. At least, that is how I remember it. My TU report only has one listing for this merged account while Eq and Ex have a listing for each account. Both are labeled Capital One but one has a $300 CL and the other has an $1800 CL. In June 2012, I was 30 days late. Since Eq and Ex list the account twice at that time, the 30 day late mark shows up twice.

I was using the FICO score simulator today and noticed that nothing I did could get Eq and Ex as high as TU unless I made regular payments for 15 consecutive months. The only thing I can think of are those two marks. Once they are gone, all three scores are within a few points.

Is it worthwhile to dispute the marks? What language would I use in the dispute? And, if they keep one of the 30 day late marks, would my score with Eq and Ex improve or is one 30 day late as bad as two?

Having 1 late reporting twice will matter, but since it is 2012 the lates will drop off next year in any case, and the older they are the less harm they cause. Wheather it would be worth disputing is dependant on how much having it report twice might help your AAoA next year, if the accounts are merged on the report it may lower your AAoA at those two CRA's.

Re: Worth Disputing and Would FICO Score Improve?

Thanks for the feedback. Unwisely, very unwisely, I combined that card with another Cap 1 card last month thus permanently cancelling the card that had 11 years of history. I did not understand the importance of AAoA and thought it was ‘smart’ to combine them and just have one card with a provider.

This is why I am asking lots of questions before any changes. Thank you for your patience.

I would not dispute it since the account is closed and they could delete the entire TL.  Better to let it fall off after 10 years then to do something that would get it removed earlier.

Re: Worth Disputing and Would FICO Score Improve?

Another point to the OP, simulators are complete garbage.  Don't put much stock in what they say.  If you'd like to know what may happen to your score if you do X or Y to your profile, simply start a thread in this section with a title, "What happens to my score if I do X" and then in your thread list out as much as you can regarding your profile and your proposed change.  The members of this forum can give you advice and predictions that will make any simulator go cry in the corner.
