does "piggy back" riding really help your credit?

I was informed a couple of years ago when i began to restore my credit that one other way to rebuild my credit was to ask friends and family who are financially stable, pay their bills on time and have a strong credit history with no lates, to add me on to their accounts to help me boost my score..well . ..as i cleaned up my credit, bought a home (subprime), paid on time as well as my car loan that i had before i bought the home.. i had no credit but that credit at the time. my mother added me on to her chase.. i guess it helped..because shes had that card for 1 years and she keeps it at 0 balance. my father added me to his american express.. i thought he paid his bill in full but he doesnt so now that account and balance is on my credit and it looks like i owe 3000.. my scores are tu-667..eq-757...exp-663..my scores were above a 700about 8 months ago..i also have been applying for credit and was approved for some cards.. should i have my father remove from his american express? will it help or hurt?

OK - it's a revolving account -
