which is why i was on disco $500 secured for 7 months, they 4xed my line and gave back my deposit and im still showing that im a responsible burrower. All this was while cap1 was struggling to raise me from $300 to $500 with no rewards. It’s the company more so the card. how long did you wait when you first established credit (not re-establish) for the “big dogs”?

Two years after having the same card you trashed to start with. I started at one card out of BK (which you dont have) at 1200. Went thru all 5 Cap1 cards and ended up with $36k with the 3 below in 2.4 yrs. Then came the the rest one by one. Now at 77k in 3 and a half yrs. You have to prove yourself first for at least a year until better things come long as your scores go up then the card choices go up with it. You could have upgraded that Plat to a QS to get cash back after 3 months.

But you never gave it a chance. In time (see below) I closed the bucket cards because I made it out of the starter arena. You could have better cards in time than me. Because you dont have to live with a BK like myself. So I'll just say its the card not the company that builds credit. FICO could care less what the name is on the card. You dont get more points for a AMEX over a Credit One. Good Luck.

Re: generally new credit holder, need some help

well they always pull experian, when i apped i had 2 cards and 6mo of history and my fico8 was 716, but they pulled my bankcard2 score which was 724, they could use either score. you're in the ballpark so if you get a good prequal from them then you could go for it right now, otherwise shoot for when your experian scores are 720ish like mine were.

go to their site and do a prequal but make sure to put your income even though they say it's optional. and if you get a prequal they'll only show 3 cards, but your approval odds are good on the similar cards to those. the prequal they showed me meant i was good for every single card they had. don't sign up through the prequal page, you'll get a higher signup bonus offer by going to the site on incognito mode.

once you have any amex card they'll send you preapprovals after about 3mo for other cards, it's super easy to get a 2nd amex and it's a sp. so for people that are really worried about approval odds, the co-branded hotel/airline cards have the easiest approvals. then you just sit back and wait for them to show you approval on the one you really wanted. your score is good enough that you don't need that little trick but if you're feeling nervous or actually did want one of those that's basically a guaranteed way in the door for you.

Re: generally new credit holder, need some help

okay so i just prequaled on amex site and they listed 5 cards

Blue Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card

Gold Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card

Hilton Honors American Express Card

Hilton Honors American Express Surpass® Card

Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card

listed backwards so aspire was first blue was last

should i be worried that its all the offbrand cards? or like you said if one is okay then all should be alright

also i believe my score is reporting a 13% util going to be 1% after the 6th, should i wait for that? thanks for all the replies btw

Re: generally new credit holder, need some help

i think you must be reading it wrong, they only show you 3 offers if you successfully prequalify.

your util isn't bad, but if you think your score will go up a bit you could wait, might get a higher starting limit for a higher score. they're pretty generous with limits and cli's though, i got 6k and theres a chance they'll make it 18k by next week.

Re: generally new credit holder, need some help

if you only see prequals for their hotel and airline co-branded cards then that's not a good sign for apping a cashmagnet!

this prequal tool might think you're only interested in hotel cards. what you can do is go browsing the cashmagnet card page before you do the prequal, it uses tracking cookies to see what you click on and pages you've been to. so you want cookies enabled, don't do the prequal in a incognito mode where it's blocking cookies and etc.

when i did prequal they only showed 3 offers total. my prequal page was a bce, a gold chargecard, and a airline card. and that basically meant: any creditcard, any chargecard, any airline/hotel card.

this is how it used to look for a prequal:

amex-pre-approved-offers

try the instructions on this page, see if you get different prequal results

Re: generally new credit holder, need some help

very interesting, just did what you mentioned and checked prequal on my phone and got only three like you mentioned, cash magnet with offer of $150 welcome bonus, everyday credit card, and blue delta miles. kinda weird.

also on computer it didnt ask for annual income but mobile it did. and yes made 1000% sure it was official site on both. odd but im kinda liking the fact the card i want is on the prequal list

Re: generally new credit holder, need some help

that means you're good to app for it right now! i think the bonus offer will be $200 for cashmagnet if you go there in a incognito browser. when you go there, don't do the prequal again you just go to the page with the cards and see what the bonus offer is. Cat Tongue

heya friends, i was looking for some advice on my 1 and only discover card.

Currently ive been religiously reporting a $0 balance every other month im not having a 15-20% balance reported.

Is this how it should be done? main goal is high scores in the shortest time possible while ofcourse being patient, i wanna take on more rewards and credit and might try to app again in next statement ($0 balance report for me)

should i keep following this route? for a better background i have a $2000 credit limit and spend around $5-6000 every month so statement balance is always paid its just a reporting game im playing here, dont know if its helpful or even if im doing it right. also im at 11 month credit history about to be a year coming nov 6 no loans or derogs

Thanks for reading and the help!

My advice would be to test it. For one month let a $25 balance report, and see if your FICO 8's are higher or lower than they are with the zero balance.

If you expand to 2 cards, then you can definitely let one report a zero balance, and the other report a small balance, for optimization of your FICO scores.
