Suggesting Change to Quote Function

Is there any way that the quote function could change so that "only the comments made by the person you are directly responding"  get quoted, and NOT the entire string of quote after quote after quote which leads to needlessly long scrolling, especially when viewing on mobile browser?

It is extremely annoying having to scroll through the entire string of quotes that may consist of 4,5,6 or sometimes even more posters' comments.  On mobile, it gets so bad that you end up seeing one letter per line because there is not enough horizontal space to account for the quote dividers to indicate that A quoted B who quoted C, who quoted D, etc.

There are certain posters who don't bother to use the mentioning function or cut down the previous string of quotes, only to respond with 1 or 2 sentences.  Just to read that 1 or 2 sentences, we have to do needlessly long scrolling just to get to the point.

I hope this can get addressed in the intereet of cutting down fluff and making things easier to navigate through and read faster.

In addition to that change I would also add the ability to quote separate blocks of texts.  Some newbies post WAY too much information and responding doesn't need a quote of 3 additional parapraphs of irrelevant information.  To be able to highlight the desired text and quote only that would be a big help.

Re: Suggesting Change to Quote Function

Some post with quoting everything instead of just responding. You can go to the one post you want to quote and use that post and quote it. Or just tag the person you want to respond to by the "@" and pick the poster from the drop down list. Yes it does get awfully long after a while.

I always tag the user I want to reply to with the "@" symbol all the time.  If I wanted to quote someone, I go through the process to delete all the previous comments quoted as a chain, so that whatever I quote is only the latest comment made by that person I directly want to reply to.

You are right.  A lot of people just use the quote function without thinking, and doing so leads to massive strings and chain of quote after quote after quote.  On a desktop, this isn't as bad though it does get a bit tedious.  On mobile, it looks horrible.

It is counter productive to ask people either not to quote a long string and chain of quote after quote after quote, or to refrain from using the quote function altogether.  The quote function itself needs a little revamp so that by default, only the most recent comment gets added into the quote, not the entire string and chain.

@Absolution16You dont have to go that far deleting. Just go back to the one you want to quote specifically. Then it will be just the three of you.

@Absolution16 I think this is a matter of perspective. I see your point when it comes to small threads of a couple of pages; however, when it comes to threads that are 20+ pages long, I, for one, have appreciated the multiple-tiered quotes as I have been able to follow points of mini-conversations within the thread without having to go backwards several pages searching for context. Think about what would happen if you were trying to follow a comment on page 20 that was made on a thread's mini conversation that was on page 4, referencing things from page 2. It would be somewhat tedious to follow the conversation if all you saw was the quote from page 4 with no refernce to when it was written or where it was located in the thread. Outside of scrolling backwards through 16 pages of comments, you would have to either use the search function or just give up.

There have been many instances where I have appreciated long, multi-tiered quotes, as they have given me all of the information I needed in one, sole message.

But, again, I definitely can understand how on some mobile browsers it could cause the posts to appear cluttered and awkward.

Re: Suggesting Change to Quote Function

The issue with nested quotes, particularly on mobile devices, was brought up when the redesign of the site was launched in 2018 and several times since.  Unfortunately, this does not appear to be something that will be resolved.  On desktop it's not too much of a hassle to cut out some of the previous replies, but it can be cumbersome and time-consuming to do so when composing a reply on mobile.  Here's a screenshot of a previous bug report I did, and I wish I could say it was a complete exaggeration but I have actually seen multiple posts that looked like this on mobile when there were too many nested replies:

IIRC it only took 6 replies enclosed to make the next post display with one letter per line.
