I don't know if I'm answering your question, but there are a few different ways you can see new or unread posts already. One way is to click on the board (e.g. SLs, CCs, RYC, here, and so on) and you'll see a column going down for unread posts:
If you click on any number within the second column after the thread title, it'll automatically take you to first post within that thread that you haven't read.
Another way is to scroll to the bottom of board or community and you can see all of your unread threads.
Finally, all unread threads are bolded or unread posts within a given thread results in the thread being bolded.
Also, I never tinkered with this, but IIRC there's a setting to show unread threads at the top of the community as opposed to the bottom. I'll defer to others on that. There are settings that you can control which would change the appearance.
