Re: Feedback wanted: myFICO site design improvements

I apologize if this was mentioned already. The improvement that would really really help is improving one particular aspect of the search function.

Forum software at some other forums lets you see the results returned as either titles or individual posts.

Let's suppose that there were only three threads on USAA at this forum, and each thread had 20 posts.

Right now if I do a search on USAA, I would get pages and pages of 60 individual posts. It's usually faster for me to find what I'm looking for to see the results as titles. If I were able to select that preference, then instead of 60 posts I'd just see three results.

Another aspect of improving this forum -- I don't know what the proper terminology is to use for this .. but this is the first forum in years that I've used that uses html code. The rest of the forums that I visit use a forum software that doesn't use html code .. like the vbulletin forum software that the following forum uses (link)

I don't mind the html code in here, but it's "messier" ... when I go to quote someone, there's a huge soup of html code to look at and look past when I'm trying to find the sentences that I want to edit. The forum software that doesn't use html code is "cleaner" ... without the < br > , < hr > , < blockquote > , & nbsp; etc.

Plus the code words in the non-html vbulletin software seem to be a little shorter which helps add to looking "cleaner" ... [ url ] instead of < blockquote >
[ color=red ] instead of < font color="red" >
etc.

.... and ... it'd be nice not to have "message edited by ..." after each time that I edit a post. What I mean is that if i edit a post five times, then on this forum there'll be a string of five "message edited by ..." which looks cluttered

Re: Feedback wanted: myFICO site design improvements

Another suggestion .. some other forums are starting to offer two ways to search .. with one method you toggle a button to indicate you want to use the forum software to search for something. With the other method you toggle a button to indicate that you want to use google to search for something. I had read a comment that when users use google, that reduces the workload of the forum software.

Re: Feedback wanted: myFICO site design improvements

One more comment.. With other forum software, when I receive a private message a pop-up box appears. Unless I'm blanking it out of my memory right now, on this forum the only way to know if I've received a private message is to keep an eye on the upper-right corner of the screen for "(1 New)".

In my opinion, the pop-up box would offer a little better guarantee that I'll be become aware that I've received a private message.

If I'm reading this correctly, I think the forums have this capability. Click "Advanced" and make sure that Posts (rather than Users) is selected over on the left. Then on the right, you'll see a list of click boxes, including Subject, Body, Teaser, Attachment, Labels. ("Teaser"? We have teasers?) Unclick everything but subject, and that should search on subjects (titles) only.

When I'm particularly fumbly and have to edit a post multiple times, I just highlight and delete all the previous edit messages, in hopes that I will look slightly less of an idiot.

eta: not that I'm saying you look like an idiot! More coffee, more coffee...

(I love my html, since it's here on the forums that I figured it out, so I'm tiptoeing away from that part of your post. Smiley Very Happy However, I do wish that there were a shorter command than < blockquote >. At the end of a long day, "blockquote" can be a terrifically difficult word to type repeatedly. I appreciate your reply, but what I was trying to describe is a different aspect of the search function.

Do what you said of unclicking the boxes except for the subject.

Then do a search for the word USAA

There are 816 results. On page one of my screen,
- two results are for the same thread "Re: USAA ... declined???",

- two results are for a thread called "Re: USAA Approval",
etc.

One page two of the results, there are seven results for "Re: USAA Raising Rates to 11.9".

When I said that I want to see the results returned as individual titles, what I meant is that, using USAA as example, individual threads are often repeated numerous times in the results. This makes it time-consuming to scroll through page after page of results sifting through repetitions of particular threads.

What I would like is an option to only see threads mentioned just one time each in the results.

Take the hometheater forum as an example (link). At that site, what I'm asking would be accomplished by checkmarking "show results as threads" under the heading "show results as" (located down toward the bottom of the screen)

Re: Feedback wanted: myFICO site design improvements

Oh, of course, I see what you mean now, and I absolutely agree. And if it's a hot topic, all the hits are spread over multiple screens.

That would be a great option.

Re: Feedback wanted: myFICO site design improvements

@haulingthescoreup:

There are more advanced forum software that have the ability to support what is called multi-quote. This allows you to quote multiple posts simply by selecting them and then replying to them all in one post. This way you don't have to write a separate post for each and every person's post you want to reply to or do what you don't like and have to sit there with the <blockquote> option to get it to work. The site has a long way to go to being a more friendly forum software but hey, it works.

Re: Feedback wanted: myFICO site design improvements

@haulingthescoreup:

Here it shows my point again, this board software is not as advanced as others that DO indeed have this ability and feature built in actually. They return them in a threaded fashion, meaning, they will show the unique thread that the search appears in, and if there is multiple hits under that thread, then it becomes a tree hierarchy under each heading.
