I had a similar situation with HSBC canceling a card on me. Unlike your situation, I did not have a balance on the card, and they didn't "ratejack" me - if you want to get technical, they were already charging me some outrageous interest rate, but again, I owed no money, so wasn't directly affected. They did however out of the blue, cancel me due to inactivity. I would agree with Sylvia and King, that they (CCC's) are tightening their belt buckles, and want us to use their cards - even if it is for 5 bucks every few months or so. Like you, I was pissed that this was going to affect my total CL, so what did I do about it? After HSBC so graciously cancelled me, I app'd for a Discover More (after receiving an invitation in the mail later that month) and was approved with a 3k limit - increasing my total available CL by 2250 bucks. Of, course YMMV. I used to have a Direct Merchants back in the day, and in all honesty, I want to carry cards in my wallet which carry a little more weight than HSBC or Direct Merchants. So looking back in hindsight, I think I am much better off today, than I was late last year. I would much rather carry a BOA, a Chase, a Citi, a Discover or Amex before putting another HSBC back in my wallet. The former seem to me like real cards, as opposed to the ones which come with training wheels. I'm talking about you, C(r)ap1.
