I am asking for a friend who i am helping with his credit. if there is a collection reported on the report, what is the date that you need to be going by to determine when it should be falling off your report? I believe that it is the "Last Activity" date or last reported, but just wanted to confirm so that i was not giving him bad information. Any help is always appreciated.
It would be the Date of First Delinquency (DOFD). The DOFD is usually only reported on the reports you get from annualcreditreport.com. You can get them by calling the CRA's too. Another way would be to look at the payment history for the last time it was current before going into delinquency.
i was looking at his report, and the only date that is showing there is the open date. Some of the accounts are from 2009 and am trying to figure out if he should dispute them since he is saying he paid it but i dont want to risk it being verified and last activity date being renewed since there isnt one instead of just letting the time go by if they are going to be falling off soon anyways.
yes they are showing as unpaid balances. i am having go in and dispute the ones that are paid since i have found that if they are paid collections and you dispute, the CA doesnt take the time and research since they are paid and they get deleted. He has a couple of the same companies on his so i know how they handle it.
If a paid collection is still showing a balance, a dispute is in order.
However, it is no more effort on part of the debt collector, upon receiving such a dispute and determining that it is paid, to simply update their reporting to paid, closed, $0 balance. They may decide to delete, but most likely not because of any extra time or expense to simply update.

I would not do this, if it doesnt get deleted and it updates there is going to be a Fico score drop. We do not advocate the disputing of valid credit info on My Fico. The way to go after them is with a GW letter asking that the TL be removed.
