Need some advice for first time auto buyer!

First of all I would like to say thank you to everyone for all the good information provided in other posts.Since reading this website from about 6 months ago I have been able to raise my fico score on boh Equifax and Transunion scores by around 50 points!

This is my situation.Looking to purchase my first car with no cosigner.Current car that I have the dealership just added my name to the lease but never had me as a cosigner for credit so after paying the bill for the last 3 years it does not show anything for me.(hard lesson learned, dealership hit me with a spot delivery and then told me I was not approved.).

I have been at my job for 3 years, earn $42,000 a year.My credit history is limited.Have one card with a $2,000 limit for two years and another card for $1,000 limit for 7 months. Both have a zero balance. Never a late payment on either.

Current transunion fico is 729(which is the only one the dealership I am using pulls/also my best score).Dealership uses auto enchanced scores.

Only 2 hard inquires.

Looking at putting $2,000 down, can do $3,000 if necesary.Car that I am looking at buying(new) would be around $24,000 after taxes and dealer fees so likely financing $22,000 out of it for 60 or 72 months.

My DTI is almost non existant. No mortage, no student loans,no childsupport, ect. Wife and sister split the rent under thier names.

My wife hates credit unions, she had a really bad experience with one in the last few years so we would rather not go that route.

As a first car buyer is there anything I should do differently? Could I expect to get financed even if it is at a higher rate for the first year or two and then refi?

Thanks in advance!

Re: Need some advice for first time auto buyer!

If your current score is 729 and you never had any laters and your cc's have a $0 balance. I believe that if you are going into a new car dealer with 2k down payment you shouldn't have a problem at all. It's so hard to say becuase of everything going on these days. Bottom line there are banks out there that would love to give you a loan. Your off to a great start. Now if you have baddies in the past then they might think twice.

Re: Need some advice for first time auto buyer!

The one thing I forgot to mention was that about a month ago I tried to get a $24,000 loan thru capital one auto finance online. I was declined on the reasoning of never having a previous car loan before and also the time of my credit history.

They did pull my equifax fico score which is 682 along with my transunion. The only different thing that I have on my equifax is 1 additional inquiry for a verizon phone I got about 5 months ago.

Then they sent my info thru a 3rd party loaner called roadloans which approved me  with a "great" (per thier words) interest rate of 21% for $14,900 on a used car...

The ironic thing is my credit card with the $1,000 limit is thru them,go figure.

Is it typical of banks or dealerships to decline based on no previous car loan history? Is my fico auto score going to be so much lower than my regular fico score because of this?

Thank you again in advance for the advice!

Re: Need some advice for first time auto buyer!

Well, from what i've read roadloans is more for people that have poor credit and that is their only choice. Not sure if that 100% true maybe someone who has has a loan from roadloans can inform you better on them. I can tell you that new dealerships, not always but most of the time use there own banking such as Ford has ford motor credit which is were i got my car from 0APR% for 60 months. Keep in mind i had no credit score at the time i only had a very strong co-signer. If you go into a new car dealership you should be fine i would think.

As for your fico score being atuo score being lower. Sometimes they only use your regular fico score. I'm not sure how it works if yuo've never had a auto loan in the past. But, I'm sure it wouldn't go down. Good luck and happy car shopping!!

Re: Need some advice for first time auto buyer!

A lot of car companies offer first time buyer programs. This is for people with no previous auto loan history. Toyota Credit's, is 6 months of positive credit history and 10% down. Search around to find out which dealer will offer the best deals for your situation.

Re: Need some advice for first time auto buyer!

With your scores, getting approved for financing shouldn't be a problem.  The finance manager at the dealership will be able to do a lot more for you than any online bank.

IMO, you should never drive a car off a dealer's lot owing more than it is worth.  In your case, you are planning to owe about $22K on a car that's only going to be worth about $14-$16K.  Most banks will not refinance a vehicle for more than it's worth, and the value of the car keeps going down.  It also means you need GAP insurance (an extra cost) just in case the car gets totaled while you still owe more than what you'll get from your insurance.

With your limited credit history, I would recommend finding a decent used car in the $4-$5K range, paying the $2K down on a 24-36 month loan and establishing a payment history for at least a year.  If everything esle stays the same, you'll end up with better credit and the money you save in payments you can save up for your next down.
