A bit frustrated with BoA - need advice!!

When I started rebuiling my credit 3-4 years ago one of the cards I started with was the Boa secured credit card.  I sent in a $400 deposit and after approx 18 months they sent back my deposit and then the card was changed to an unsecured card.  (I felt great about this especially since Cap1 is still holding onto my $800 deposit for their secured card.)

I called two days ago to request to have this card upgraded and they did not have any offers for me.  So I then asked for a CLI to $5k (my CL has been $400 since 2013 so I figured this would be a bit of a stretch). They could not give me an instant approval but would get back to me in 3-5 days.  I am still waiting for a letter or a phone call but when I checked my account today my CL is now $5k.

Should I call back and see if they would be now willing to upgrade this card?  They already did a HP on my Transunion - which is my best score 717.  Having this old Platinum Plus Visa isn't doing much for me and I would really rather have a rewards card.

To give you full picture - here are the other cards I currently have or have been recently approved for:

Barclays JetBlue World Mastercard - did a recon yesterday and was approved for $2.5k SCL

Amex Hilton - approved last week $1.5k SCL

Chase Slate - approved last week $500 SCL

Cap1 Venture - approved two weeks ago - $15k SCL

Cap1 QS - appoved last month - $3k SCL

DiscoverIT - approved last month - $1.6k SCL

Care Credit - $11k CL

Walmart Store card - $6k CL

Cap1 secured card - $800

On that Cap-1 Secured it will never be unsecured they dont upgrade them so if you want your funds bank and dont need the line anymore you can just close it out as it most likely has done its job.

Congrats on the increase. I would definitely call again and see if you can PC it to something else now. Maybe you just got a bad rep.

Re: A bit frustrated with BoA - need advice!!

Same thing happened to me; got my secured BoA in July 2015 and then had it graduate in March 2016. I called CS on the day my deposit was returned and asked for a PC to the Travel Rewards card, but the rep said that they can't PC my card into any other card. I also asked for the AF to be waived (why pay an AF for a card that has no rewards...?), but they wouldn't do that either. I'm very disappointed with their response, but I can't truly complain too much because they were my first CC that I got after 2 years without credit cards and a big charge off the year before that. If anyone else has any luck PC'ing a recently-graduated BoA card, please let us know. If possible, I want to PC mine before the AF comes up in July.

still has a anual free of 39 bucks a year...after you graduate from secure to unsecure they upgrade you to rewards card and waive the anual fee...in his case got only a cli.

you need to call the recon  and ask again for the rewards with no AF.

Re: A bit frustrated with BoA - need advice!!

@220: Which recon number should I use? Last time I tried, I called BofA:  866-811-4108  (Credit analyst - existing cardholders) ~myjourney.

If I can at least get the AF waived, then I'd have no reason not to close this card. At the moment, its my longest open account so I know that if I close it, i'll take a pretty significant hit on my AAoA.

That's not true about the AAOA. The closed account will remain on your report for many years (up to 10) after closure, so your AAOA won't be impacted anytime soon by closing, and your existing accounts will be that much older by then.

To me, fighting to get upgrades and CLIs on secured cards is a losing battle. The card serves a purpose -- to build some history -- and after that, I'd say just close it and apply for something better.  You have plenty of new approvals on decent cards, so I wouldn't keep wasting time and energy on making your BOA secured card better.

I took your advice and did an online chat with a BoA rep and requested to PC my Platinum Plus Visa.  I was told my account will be reviewed and they will get back to my no later than 4/20/2016.  So this is def a step in the right direction... will keep you posted.
