Backstory: I have a CO with AMEX still on my credit report. It's due to fall off next year, and has been paid in a settlement (a month ago).
I was bored at work (slow day) and I decided "eh. I'm not gonna get a HP anyway, so why not apply... and just see what happens."
So I applied for the EveryDay, and pushed a button. A screen came up that said "We're almost done. What are your assets, and what's their value?" I filled it out. Got denied, as expected.
The weird thing, though, is that I was HP'd.... and asked a follow-up question re: the valuation of my assets before being outright denied.
Does this mean I'm not on their blacklist? Everything I've read suggests you're only HP'd if the SP comes back positive... is that right?
I know this is almost purely speculative, but my curiousity's getting the best of me.

Sometimes you can get denied for Amex cards on a HP. It's happened to me once with the PRG and that was several weeks after I got in with Amex. Other than that, my denials with them have been SPs.
As far as I know, its a softpull if you use the pre-approval link and then a hard pull (regardless of outcome) once you apply.
In your case, it sounds like you went straight to the apply link.
I have no idea about how the blacklist part works.

Well, I got the denial letter today. The only reason mentioned was my FICO score was too low. And it was the FICO 08 of my Experian. Nothing about a past relationship.
This bodes well. Hopefully.
You may want to consider a recon with the Amex EO.
I've had some success with varies credit analyst and EO's.

Make sure you can explain everything on your credit.
I had one person me about my plans to pay down another card that was at about 95% UTL. I had good answers and that same company approved me for a $2500 CL.

Thanks for the suggestion.
I don't actually need or want the card, it was more an attempt at seeing if I'm blacklisted.
If I were to recon, I feel like I'd be pressing my luck because "American Express - Charge Off" is at the top of all three reports.
SP is usually if you are a current card holder and if approved it's a HP, now at times it could be an HP for current card holders also even when denied.

I would say it depends on whether you wish to pursue the reconsideration route. Typically, from anecdotal information, the letter would have mentioned the negative or past relationship with AMEX if that were the case. The recent outcome simply based their decision from the CRA. There have been individuals who have been successful with re-establishing their relationship with AMEX even with past COs (paid or unpaid). I would venture it would depend on how long ago was the AMEX CO and the amount. However, if you feel your overall profile supports overturning the decision, you can always try.
Reconing will be an additonal pull .
Oh my god. My Experian just went up 40+ points to 668 (not great, but better) and I was feeling gutsy and just reapplied for the EveryDay card.
Got approved. $5k limit w/17.99% APR. Funnily enough, my score experienced that bump because my AMEX charge off was just marked as settled.
I'm in shock. Just submitted a request to have my "Member Since" date changed... if it goes through, I'll get a credit line dated to 2004!
