I just want to thank HybridGunz & @RichardJ for suggesting pre-approval options. I didn't realize this was even possible with AMEX. I was literally looking for a new travel card, as my wife and I are going on a trip to Europe and I want to take advantage of some travel points / rewards and came across this.
So my story - I have a 650 ish credit score across all 3 CBs, my current credit utilization is about 25% (about 9k of 35k). Recently in November, I got one of those pre-approved Chase Sapphire Preferred offers in my Chase account, took a chance off the suggetions on these forums and got approved.
Last night, figured let's try this pre-approval thing with ALL the card companies and see what's available to me. Lo and behold, AMEX Gold popped up for me on their page, I couldn't believe it. Sure enough gave it a go and got approved immediately. I know there isn't really a "spending limit" but they have a little feature on there to see if you would get approved for a large purchase - I plugged in 9k and was approved. Very cool. I just gotta say, to the OP - you never know what can happen man. I never in my wildest dreams thought I'd have a CSP and much less an AMEX Gold and to the community here, thank you for being so darned helpful. Not sure what I would do without these forums.
In 2 years I am going for the Sapphire Reserve. Screw it, I want that puppy and will continue to clean up my credit.
Congrats, and two years is a good waiting period. I'm holding out for two years for Amex Bonvoy for a couple of reasons. One, I'm gardening, and two I won't qualify for the SUB until I've had my new Chase Bonvoy for two years. BTW, I think you meant RobertJ, but the funny thing is my brother's name is Richard.

Definitely do this first. No HP required as it only uses a SP. Good luck OP.
This statement regarding no hard pull is inaccurate especially if this is your first Amex card and not guaranteed if you opt to apply for an additional Amex. Chances of a SP are greater after your first Amex card.
There's no HP to try for pre-approval. It even says so.

Be careful using that. Too many clicks on it with large amounts and you could trigger a financial review, especially since you are a VERY new cardmember.
I was out of the country on business for a week so I was delayed in responding. I did the pre-approcal and got "we could not find Pre-Qualified Offers for you at this time." from Amex. It shows the Gold, Amex Cash and Amex everyday as options I might like. I dont want the hit if i have no chance as that will drag me a few points at least. Thoughts?
My util is 4% - I work hard to manage that to as low as possible. 2 are 0% but all are below 9%. I have lates - Last CC late was 9/17 and last late of any kind was 12/17. I have two collections LVNV I have been trying to get off - they will not PFD. I have two old (4 and 6 year) negatives.
What was your Experian at the time - I read they pull Experian FICO 8. I dont mind the low limit - I can prove it up over 6 months and pay mid month and all that to increase it. I am just looking for a card I dont have to pay off before the statement posts to prevent score drops. I pay my discover the day before it is due to get it to 1%. Thoughts?

This was bugging me and it has already been addressed but couldnt help myself. I'm guilty of "half reading" posts and responding with the wrong information.
@doinit1 - A preapproval or prequalify via the Amex website and even using the link in the above comment will NOT ever be a hardpull. It explicitly states this next to the little checkbox at the bottom right before you submit the page. It is not a hardpull and it is not a credit card application and will not effect your credit score.
If it were a hardpull I would be laying low in the 400's as I check weekly for new offers.
Cheers
Based on the info given.....
I would wait a while more.
That said, really nice improvement over the last year. Keep up the good file building ! You'll get there.
My EX FICO 8 is now 672 and EX FICO 8 Bank Card is 674. This is what i hear AMEX pulls. I got a "CONGRATULATIONS" with a AMEX Delta Skymiles CC offer from AMEX. What is your experience with applying after a "CONGRATULATIONS" message from the pre-qual site. I prefer the green\gold card as I would like to switch to it for work travel and the balance owed does not count toward your % utilization.
Thoughts?
