Hello all,
Longtime lurker, first-time poster!!
I am in the middle of my credit rebuild, with an end goal of not worrying about being "rejected" whenever I apply (not taking over the world or getting all the Credit)... I think I am nearing my goal, I currently have:
1. Capital One Quicksilver - $850 CL - 48 months in August
2. Credit One - $300 CL - no annual fee until and 24 months in December
3. USAA AmEx Secured - $2750 (USAA is apparently changing everything in July 2021, we'll see) 48 months
And my scores are:
1. Equifax - 669
2. Experian - 693 (Using Experian Credit Works)
3. TransUnion - 635
Student loans amounting to a house, but current and in good standing.
My salary is $75,000, over the last year I have paid all baddies/closed/charge-offs, have 8-10 HP and no BK.
I would like to get an AmEx BCP (will fit my budget and lifestyle), but I am only getting offers (CK and Experian) for AmEx BCE and the Gold Card.
What are my chances of approval for BCP with a cold application? Thx
@User1117329 Need to know what your EX Fico is in order to give better feedback.
Welcome to the forums! The marketing you are receiving through both CK, and EX (credit works) are just that-marketing only. They are in absolutely no way firm offers of credit, nor does having a card that you are after not show up as pre-approved on those sites a sign you would not be approved. I would suggest starting out on the AMEX website. They have a pre-approval option that is typically reliable. Try running your info through there and see how it turns out. With a 693 EX FICO 8 score, you are on the edge of a BCP approval, but it is most definitely a possibility. Give that wheel a spin and report back with what they offer you. Do you have any negatives on your reports? If so what are they?
If you are getting pre-approved for the BCE, you should be able to qualify for the BCP. The underwriting isn't much different, maybe not at all.
I think you should take a look at the pre-approval tool on the Amex website. It's in the "Cards" section. From my experience it's been accurate in predicting my application outcome. It's a soft inquiry so you won't be penalized to see if you have any pre-approvals. Best wishes to you when you check and if you end up applying! The BCP is an amazing card!
You got some good suggestions above.
To summarize:
The Vantage 3.0 scores that you get from the likes of Credit Karma and Experian Credit Works are not reliable indicators of what your Experian FICO 8 score is, and Experian FICO 8 is the score that American Express uses. If you don't have a free source for an Experian FICO 8 score you can get your Transunion score for free by signing up at https://www.discover.com/free-credit-score/ and you don't need to hold a Discover card to get your free score. In most cases ones Transunion and Experian FICO 8 scores will be close enough to get a good sense of where you're at.
Similarly, "recommendations" from Experian, Credit Karma, and other similar sites like WalletHub are based upon general demographic information and not your own credit profile. They are also not reliable indicators of approval.
Go here: https://www.americanexpress.com/us/credit-cards/check-for-offers/ and see if you prequalify for any cards. AMEX prequals are pretty solid, if you get one the odds of a successful application are roughly in the 80-90% range. Not getting a preapproval does not mean that one would automatically be denied if applying, but the odds are not as good.
Congrats on your credit rebuild, those are great scores and similar to my scores in 2019. Thank you for sharing the USAA information as I was getting ready to cancel my secured American Express. So I will wait for USAA and watch see what happens in July 2021. Just remember rebuilding takes time and the results will be well worth the wait . . . Best wishes!
THANK YOU ALL for the quick responses!!
And answering questions asked about my profile:
1. Fico EX score - didn't see it one in Experian.
2. One negative still showing is a charge off paid in full (40 days back) to NFCU (another story, for another day)
3. AmEx website shows prequalify offers for the following 3 cards
1. Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card
2. Hilton Honors Card
3. Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card
Hmm, the plot thickens. Again, I am most intrigued by the cash back of the BCP as travel is not high on my priority list, but I don't mind lying in wait for the negative to clear Experian. Or does the three prequals put me inline with BCP??

This doesn't necessarily mean you wouldn't be approved for the BCP, but unfortunately it points more towards a no than a yes. The underwriting standards for AMEX cards are generally thought to be broken down into three categories. The first, and easiest to obtain are their co-branded cards, such as Delta and Hilton families of cards. The second category, and middle of the road as far as profile scrutiny goes are their charge cards, Green, Gold, and Platinum. The most difficult UW standards are for their core cards, BCP, BCE, CM, ED, EDP. The fact that they are only showing pre-approval for their co-branded cards is not the best sign in the world. I would suspect that CO is playing a role, that is why I asked about it. AMEX likes clean files. If they were to throw you an approval now, it would very likely be for $1,000, and they would probably not grant you a CLI until that CO is completely clear from your reports.
When you run the pre-qual, it only shows 3 cards. But if you click on "all cards" there might be more pre-quals listed there? More experienced folks may chime in and correct me if I am wrong?
